This debut album released by Jackson Browne in 1972 (SD 5051) sounds like anything but a first album by a newly signed musician. Though only 23 years old at the time, Browne's songs have a well worn, mature and spiritual quality that takes the listener on a journey of self-discovery, introspection, and inner healing. Beautifully produced and engineered by Richard Orshoff, guest musicians included: David Crosby, Jim Gordon, Albert Lee, and several others. Of course, one can not talk about this album without touching on the subject of how the now famous Lp cover came to be.
Designed by Gary Burden with photography by Henry Diltz, Jackson Browne says, "I always thought of album covers like a shield, the way Indians would dream up, literally dream, or imagine, or think of their "thing" that represented them and put that on their war shield. We used to spend a lot of time in the desert and I had a water bag on my wall. Gary (Burden) and I were discussing ideas over the phone and I said we could make it a water bag. Our generation knows what a water bag is. It's a canvas bag, made of flax so that it expands, when you submerge it in water, probably in the tire trough at a gas station, then when you pass through the super heated Mojave desert the water evaporates through the radiator grill to help the car stay cool. On my bag it said Saturate Before Using on the back, it was a little instruction. When Gary mocked the cover up I said, 'Gary, we can't put that on there because people are going to think that it is the title of my album.' Gary said, 'No way, they never would think that. They would know that's not part of it.' After so many years of people calling it Saturate Before Using the record company finally believed that was the title and they put it on the spine of the CD." There you have it....straight from the Horse's mouth.
Condition of Lp Jacket: Near Mint...."Top loader" and exceptionally well preserved....in fact, this is not only the best original mock "burlap/canvas" water bag cover I've ever seen but easily the most "textured" one as well. Very heavily textured and truly in remarkable condition. Even the spine is well preserved and near-perfect; which on this jacket is usually found with all the print worn away.
Condition of Original "Flowing Water" Inner-Sleeve: Very Good+....actually the front and back are nearly perfect....the VG grade is due to the inner sustaining two inoffensive seam splits. A new, high quality inner-sleeve will be included to house the precious record.
Condition of Record: Excellent+/- .....visually the surface looks nearly flawless, with only the faintest hairlines that are visible under strong light. The first issue white Asylum Records labels are perfect without any blemishes. The audio is superb, detailed, and well balanced. The record has a very, very minor warp....so minor that when it's spinning, you still can't see it. It produces some barely noticeable sounds for the first 15 seconds of each side. Extremely minor but I mention it because it's important to do so as this is a very sought after pressing.
