This lengthy outdoor show in Toronto's Varsity Stadium on September 13th, 1969, was originally promoted as a tribute to '50s rockers (Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry among others) but tickets sold poorly, so the promoters added other groups such as The Doors and Alice Cooper to the bill with hopes that it would help sell tickets. Hard to believe that even with these added attractions only 800 tickets were sold with only a few days to go before the festival was to begin. In desperation the promoters contacted John Lennon and asked him if he would like to emcee the show. Fortunately he agreed to perform at the concert with his newly formed Plastic Ono Band. With Lennon on the bill, ticket sales took off and the venue completely sold out its 22,000 seats. The show goes exceptionally well and most of it is filmed by (the late) famed documentary film maker, D. A. Pennebaker. It is a significant show for Lennon (who had just finished recording 'Abbey Road' a few months before) as he became the first Beatle to perform live as a "solo artist". The Plastic Ono Band consisted of Lennon, Yoko Ono, Eric Clapton on guitar, Klaus Voorman on Bass, and Alan White on drums.
On offer is the VERY FIRST and EARLIEST U.S pressing (SW-3362) from its initial release in December 1969. What's more, it is STILL SEALED. Due to the high cost to Apple Records, only the first few thousand copies of this album contained a full size, [1970] 12-month calendar inserted into the Lp jacket. (This is clearly visible in some of the pictures I've uploaded for this listing) Very few of these first pressings are found in decent condition; and even when they are, the calendar is usually missing. Those without calendar and/or sticker are quite common. Finding one with the calendar and translucent sticker and still fully sealed after 50 years is truly exceptional and extremely rare....and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
Condition: New/Factory Sealed......astounding.... that after nearly 50 years there are virtually no flaws or defects to speak of. Corners are sharp, spine is perfect....shrink wrap is still tight with 2 small "breathe holes" to the front. Back cover has a translucent sticker notifying the inclusion of the calendar. The album weighs nearly as much as a gatefold double Lp release; no doubt due to the calendar inside, but also because the record is pressed on thick and heavy vinyl as all Apple records were at this time. An incredible time capsule copy.
NB: When seeking out a "complete" vintage copy of this album always make sure the metallic spirals of the calendar are clearly visible through the shrink wrap. It's a sure way to determine whether or not it is included.
