Like a Virgin ('84) is the 2nd album by American singer Madonna. Digital recording was used; a new technique introduced at that time. The album's photographs were shot by Steven Meisel. She wanted the title & cover image to make a provocative link between her religious name Madonna, as the Catholic title for Jesus' mother Mary & the Christian concept of the virgin birth. A commercial success, it became her 1st #1 album on the USA Billboard 200 & set the record as the 1st female album in history to sell over 5 million copies in the USA. It reached #1 in Germany, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, the UK & remains 1 of the best-selling albums of all time with sales of over 22 million copies. 5 singles were released, including her 1st USA #1 "Like a Virgin". The album has attained significance as a cultural artifact of the '80s. Madonna proved that she was not a "1 hit wonder" & was able to provide herself with a permanent footing in the music world. Her songs became a lightning rod for both criticism by conservatives & imitation by the younger female population, especially "Material Girl" & "Like a Virgin". According to author J. Randy Taraborrelli, "Every important artist has at least 1 album in his or her career whose critical & commercial success becomes the artist's magic moment; for Madonna, Like a Virgin was just such a defining moment."
