Phil Roebuck has released a gritty Americana record that's emotionally literate and scrupulously faithful to his musical influences of pop 'n' roll. Roebuck recently penned the title track for PBS program The Reel South; he was appropriately selected to write the music for a show that documents the masterful and often provocative Southern tradition of storytelling.

Roebuck is a songwriter who takes the path less traveled, once writing a song about the raucous bass player (Tommy Stinson) instead of the adored frontman (Paul Westerberg) that Roebuck is often compared to. And his prowess for American rock song gems like Westerberg's "Left of the Dial" and "Answering Machine" are evident in his ability to craft those sorts of songs--in a more subdued arrangement of instruments--on his solo record. Of course, The Alpine Butterfly isn't a record that simply copies the aforementioned style, but the songs have a distant appeal to those aesthetics. Once the frontal lobe of the A&M Records pop rock band The Hollowbodies, Phil combines grit of blue collar subway busking with an Off Off Broadway aesthetic that resonates  with with those of us who are inclined to artists singing with their guts as much as their heart.

If you wish to support a great songwriter who is waiting for his heyday, consider picking up Roebuck's The Alpine Butterfly.

All purchases come with a bonus 7" single of two songs not found on the 12" LP and recorded while Roebuck was doing one man performances using beats of his handmade noise makers strapped on his back and body. The 7" captures a busking banjo train tramp. Backed with "Can I Keep You" and a video on YouTube, it's Roebuck's charm as a genuine songsmith that shines. Please see for yourself.

Phil now performs as ROEBUCK both around town and on the road. The duo includes his wife Phoenix on stand-up bass.
