Phoebe Bridgers Stranger In The Alps LP Vinyl Record — Lavendar — Julien Baker
SEALED—SEALED—SEALED
For fans of Ryan Adams, Julien Baker, Conor Oberst
Records packed meticulously; just see feedback
Bridgers’ tendency to risk heavy-handedness for the sake of emotional honesty brings to mind the recent work of ,
whose 2013 song “You Missed My Heart” gets a faithful reimagining at
the end of the album. While its dream-logic murder fantasy ties back
nicely to Bridgers’ breakout song “Killer,” Kozelek’s ballad falls short
as the de facto album closer. (It’s followed by a brief, wordless
reprise of “Smoke Signals.”) Along with the Conor Oberst-featuring
“Would You Rather,” this final stretch of songs puts Bridgers at a
distance, instead showcasing the musicians she admires and draws
inspiration from. It’s a slightly deflating end to an album that
succeeds through its unnerving, unflinching personality. By now, the
most interesting characters in Bridgers’ story are the ones she puts on
the page herself.
