These British art-rockers are interesting in that they seem to evoke heartfelt affection in listeners.
Formed in 1969, the original line-up consisted of drummer Iain Clark, singer Angus Cullen, guitarist John Heyworth, keyboard player Peter Jennings, and bassist Kevin McCarthy.  As Cressida the group was quickly signed by Polydor's Vertigo subsidiary, releasing their self-titled debut in 1970.  Produced by Osie Byrne (who'd previously worked with The Bee Gees) "Cressida" served to showcase the writing talents of Cullen and Heyworth (Clark and Jennings each contributed one selection).  While frequently tagged with a progressive label, the combination of Cullen's attractive and versatile voice, Jennings' keyboards and Heyworth's tasteful guitar made for an album that was actually highly commercial.  Somewhat unusual in my experience, this was  an album where many of the critics were right in terms of musical comparisons.
On material like 'the title track, '' and 'Depression' Cullen's performances bore more than a passing resemblance to Justin Hayward and The Moody Blues, though with a more diverse and experimental edge (hard to imagine the Moodies taking a stab at something with the jazzy edges of 'Time for Bed').  That comparison might scare off some potential listeners, but it shouldn't since I'm talking about good Moodies, versus Ray Thomas-styled pompous Moodies.  Extra credit for Heyworth's always tasteful lead guitar fills (check out the fuzz solo on 'Winter Is Coming Again').

One of he rarest of all the Vertigo records. It sold in minute quantities and was soon deleted.
Stereo only. There were no mono releases. This is a first pressing with the unlaminated
gatefold sleeve. Most of these sleeves suffered from excessive wear  and
most show signs of ringwear both front and back. Not this one. See photos.
Some minor edge/corner wear. There is no printers credit on the sleeve.
The sleeve has some slight edge wear again seen in the photos but absolutely nothing serious.
No folds No tears No writing.
Strong fully legible spine. No damage to print. So rare like this.(see photos).
The inner bag has the correct first press  "British Patent No.800513 & 973979" text.
The inner sleeve is the correct Vertigo swirl dated 9/70 -- the month the LP was released.

Slight discolouring with age. They all have this as the fixant ages. Usually worse than this.
   First press matrix marks 847904 1Y//1 and 847904 2Y//1

The labels are in awesome condition with no bleaching of colours and no spindle trails.
Look at the photos to see how good these labels are.

Now for the record itself.  It plays totally silently over the music.

There are no marks no tics no clicks no repeats no jumps.

I would grade as Near Mint.

So here we have a first press unlaminated gatefold sleeve,
first press dated inner sleeve and first press 1Y//1  & 2Y//1 matrix marks.    on one of Vertigo's rarest releases.

So there is absolutely no doubt that this is an original  first press of this prog rock monster.
