For the U.K. release here's a brief guide to its chaotic early history.

The album's official release date for the U.K. was intended to be the 4th November, 1977. However copies were released prior to this in mid to late October 1977, by Virgin Records. Initially, only available as an 11 track album, & omitting the track 'Submission'.

***************************************

V2086 : 11 Track Pressing.
Blue Virgin labels; 11 tracks on the album, omitting the track 'Submission'; Producers Chris Thomas & Bill Price; timings on labels and rightful credits. Tracks are in a different running order to the subsequent 12 track pressing. Both plain rear sleeves and 11 track rear sleeves are found to be used on the 11 track album release. (Other combinations are possible, perhaps if records and sleeves may have been swapped over time, however the labels on the 11 track album are a constant.)
Known matrix configurations are listed without chronological order for the original 11 track album, and are as follows :-

V2086 A1/B1
V2086 A1/B2
V2086 A1/B3
V2086 A2/B1
V2086 A2/B2
V2086 A2/B3
V2086 A3/B1 - Also associated with the SPOTS edition -
V2086 A3/B2
V2086 A3/B3

1977 releases - All 11 track versions credit Jones, Matlock, Cook and Rotten on EMI

V2086 : 12 Track Pressing.
At the time of the album's initial advanced release date, new master plates were been prepared including the additional track 'Submission', thus a 12 track pressing of the album was very quickly introduced to the U.K., at the start of November 1977.
Blue Virgin labels; 12 tracks on the album; Producers Chris Thomas or Bill Price; no timings on labels and numerous variations on label credits exist. Tracks are in a different running order to the 11 track pressing. Sleeve variants consist of blank, 11 or 12 tracks listed on the rear sleeve.
Matrix configurations of V2086 A5/B5 onwards were used on this 12 track pressing up until mid-1978, at which point the blue Virgin label was phased out and replaced by the red/green label with the Virgin 'scrawl' design.

N.B. - There are numerous combinations of covers and labels known to be in existence for the 12 track U.K. blue Virgin label editions. Variations exist on printed credits & sleeves listings. (Other combinations are possible, perhaps if records and sleeves have been swapped, as such a truly precise chronological numbering of these early 12 track U.K. blue label pressings is best avoided, as all variants appeared within a period of months)

1977 releases - only release 4713471 and release 8681572 credit Jones, Matlock, Cook and Rotten on EMI
All other 1977 12 track versions credit Jones, Cook, Rotten and Vicious on EMI

VP2086 : Picture Disc pressing.
Released in January 1978. 12 track pressing. Producers Chris Thomas or Bill Price; no track timings. Correct credits. Matrix configurations VP2086 A D1/B D1 ~ VP2086 A D2/B D2.

* The 12 track pressing has long been the prevalent format of the album. As such numerous official reissues of this pressing are known to exist.
** In 2007 an official '30th Anniversary' SPOT's Edition, 11 track was reissue. Tracklist

Record Collector Magazine's Grading Guide:

" The record itself is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.

The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and / or creasing.

The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.

The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.

The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.

The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler."
