Like Deep Purple’s seminal in-concert double live album, ‘Made In Japan’, ‘Uriah Heep Live’ is one of the essential period artefacts, and by rights should be a mandatory purchase for any rock fan attracted to the excitement and danger of top-flight early seventies hard rock. It is a glorious and triumphant statement of intent, with not a weak moment in sight - every track metered-out with maximum precision and excessive volume. The band achieves incredibly impressive heights on the classic tracks, ‘Look At Yourself’, ‘July Morning’ (in particular), ‘Gypsy’ and ‘Sweet Lorraine’ (stunning bass playing here from Gary Thain). ‘Sunrise’, the album opener, sets the scene perfectly with its magnificent swirl of Hammond, close-knit harmony vocals and supremely well-crafted arrangement. In many ways this track is an anathema to the bludgeon riffola of most Uriah Heep compositions and, as such, stands proud as one of their most accessible and enduring accomplishments. The track ‘Easy Livin’ is another shift in style, attacking a basic metal riff that wouldn’t be out of place on a Led Zeppelin album. This is top-grade overblown hard rock, with all the passion, pomposity, and superiority you might expect from such devotees of the art.
