Offered is a Columbia Masterworks set of both historic and asthetic content, Contrasts for Violin, Clarinet, and Piano, by Bela Bartok (X-178).

Bela Bartok performs on the piano, Joseph Szigeti on violin, the the incomparable Benny Goodman on clarinet.

This offering is the first-ever recording of this Bartok composition, and rates its own Wikipedia page:

"Contrasts ( 111, BB 116) is a scored for by (1881-1945). It is based on and dance melodies and has three movements with a combined duration of 17–20 minutes. Bartók wrote the work in response to a letter from , although it was officially commissioned by . Bartók's only chamber piece to include a wind instrument, the piece is frequently performed by the and was recorded for their Making of a Medium Series.

Szigeti originally wanted Bartók to write a short piece with two movements and a total duration of 6–7 minutes. This was most likely so that a recording of it would be able to fit cleanly on a single , with one movement on each side with capacity for approximately four minutes running time. The first version of the work, titled Rhapsody, received its premiere on 9 January 1939 at , with Szigeti, Goodman, and Endre Petri performing. Bartók subsequently added a middle movement and changed the work's title to Contrasts. Szigeti, Goodman and Bartók first performed the final, three-movement work at Carnegie Hall on 21 April 1940, and subsequently recorded it for . Bartók published the work in 1942 and dedicated it to Szigeti and Goodman."

The work is in three movements:

Verbunkos - Recruiting Dance Pihenő - "Relaxation" Sebes - Fast Dance

THE DISCS:  EX+ : There are two discs in the set, with a total of four sides (numbering: MX 178-1; MX 178-4; MX-178-2; MX 178-3). All four sides show a few light marks, & have been well-cared for over these 70 years. Surfaces are glossy, although their is evidence of some spindle wear (see photos). The sound quality should be quite good.

THE ALBUM COVER:  EX : This shows the same kind of care we see in the discs; some minor paper loss & light staining on the front (not the back) cover, likely from water. It is a heavy cover; the binding is tight & the inner sleeves are in great condition.
