Summary: First up is what you see is what you receive. None of the photos of the product listed are stock but of the item listed. Vinyl does not photograph playing condition but the record has been played for sound quality. I’m using the Goldmine record grading scale which is considered the standard for grading vinyl 7”, 10” & 12” records. The mint minus 12” vinyl long play of Tom Wait’s recording of  Small Change offered here is the 1st edition release on the US Asylum record label. Small Change is in its original shrink wrap and the back side shows pre-barcode.

Keeping the shrink on the jacket increases the value of a used record especially if the jacket is rare and can be framed, displayed or retailed. An example is as a copy of the June 1966 Beatles Capitol 12” vinyl full length record of Yesterday and Today. The valuable  ‘Butcher Cover’ is more valuable to collectors of record cover for art than the record inside. This vinyl copy of Tom Waits 1976 Small Change is  the original vinyl release in its original cover with shrink intact. Although due to poor record sales at the time Small Change was deleted from the Elektra/Asylum catalog.

This is not one of the deleted for it was purchased before Small Change went out of print and discounted as a cut-out.     The deleted copies being sold on eBay that have a cut corner, saw tooth, punched or bb drill hole in the upper or lower corner of the cover are not as prized to collectors due to their low rank among vinyl junkies which is that of a non collectible cut-out purchased from record stores bargain bin. Its the pristine jacket with record in original shrink that yields top dollar for it is preferred  among collectors of rare vinyl because it is not as common as other used copies and the value increases once framed  or matted whereas deleted and shrinkless are bargainable.

This artifact is from a bygone era that has two important features to rare vinyl collectors and record cover art collectors. Cassandra Peterson is the hot topless g-string model posing for the cover photoshoot of 1976. That’s prior to breast enlargement and the sexy vampire persona that she developed as a weekly horror television host as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. The second is the photo of Jack Kerouac on the table that Peterson is leaning against. Jack Kerouac is recognized as the Father of the Beat Generation and well known for his literary achievements. His beat poetry includes Mexico City Blues & Visions Of Cody.

His novels such as On The Road, The Dharma Bums and the Subterraneans have been reprinted numerous times and are also collectible. The Subterreans about the beat generation was made into a film in 1960. Also of interest to fellow vinyl junkies is the Rhino Record shop connection for the Small Change cover artwork. A couple of years after the Small Change cover shot the Rhino Record Shop became Rhino Entertainment Company. Check out Wild Man Fisher by Dennis Eichhorn. The CA Rhino record label released products by Elviria (actress-band) as well as marketing a box set collection of Kerouac’s works on all music formats.
