TRACKLISTING:Unlike many privately pressed discoveries made in recent years this super cult OST recorded for a very low-budget underground Brit-flick lives up to the hype blending hazy pastoral folk vibes femme-vox and soundtrack cues with a hint of psychedelia [well it was 1969!]. Written and produced by two amateur musicians John Ferdinando and Peter Howell [BBC Radiophonic Workshop] Howells budding musical/engineering prowess is put to good use here putting the pairs newly acquired Revox Tape Machine through its paces resulting in a surprisingly accomplished soundtrack recorded to a much higher standard than usual with privately pressed LPs. Incredibly Howell and Ferdinando would go on to mastermind five legendary privately pressed albums all under assumed names: Agincourt Alice Through the Looking Glass Ithaca and Friends - jeez!! All of their recordings were pressed in tiny double-digit quantities [pressing any more than 99 copies made you liable for a tax bill] and were given out to cast members friends and family. It is difficult to know exactly how many of this LP were pressed but it would appear to be around fifty copies only how many have survived even less - yikes!
Condition:-
The sleeve:
The thick card sleeve has stood the test of time remarkably well with just some light corner wear and is still largely off white & in Excellent condition with just a couple of tiny thumbnail splits to an edge or two due to the flimsy design & all text clearly legible. Please note that this top UK collectable is made just that little bit more special with the inclusion along the top edge of a hand-written name and address [almost certainly a cast/production member] with the reverse signed by John Ferdinando and Peter Howell with the cryptic message “youre our favourite extra arent you?”
Labels:
These are the original black & white rough textured variety with the ridge both sides confirming first issue. The matrices in the run-outs are machine stamped reading: SNLP103/104.
The vinyl:
All four Ferdinando and Howell privately pressed LPs [Friends only got to acetate stage] sell for around the £1500 upwards mark on the extremely rare occasions they surface for sale. The heavyweight vinyl has been professionally cleaned on a top of the line Matrix machine. Although the vinyl plays to an Excellent standard with an incredible deep sheen both sides the record displays the odd faint hairline and light scuff and there is a noticeable click for the first few rotations on the first track. Its worth bearing in mind that these records were pressed by a tiny independent Christian organisation Sound News Productions so do not have the fidelity of something recorded/mastered at Abbey Road and as such the occasional light pop & tiny crackle can be heard but nothing too excessive.
This is the first copy in 30 years that has graced the turntable at eil.com and we are really pleased to be able to offer this top UK underground vinyl rarity. Keep your eyes peeled for more John Ferdinando and Peter Howell rarities coming your way soon……
