The Beatles: Rubber Soul 1965 PMC1267 UK Mono -1-1 Loud Cut/1 Mother. Tested VG+. Pinched spine to Garrod & Lofthouse sleeve.

RARER TIMES NEW ROMAN VARIANT.

PLAY TESTED. ABSOLUTELY NO SKIPS, JUMPS, OR STICKING. AUDIO VG+

This is the first press of the sixth studio album, referred to as the ‘loud cut’ (matrices 579-1 & 580-1). When it was first mixed, the band, more specifically John, didn’t like the sound, thinking it was a bit ‘muddy’, so production was halted, and later pressings, distinguishable by having different matrix numbers, were re-mixed. Thus, this version became quite scarce, and most copies of Rubber Soul are the later press.

Black label with yellow Parlophone logo and silver print. ‘Gramophone Co’ perimeter print, and ‘Sold In U.K.’ text. First pressing also came in tracing paper-lined Emitex inners (as here) die-cut inners. This pressing has tax code KT embossed on the side 2 label, variant B. Variant B again being the rarer press, with a ‘Times New Roman’ font typeset. Most ‘loud cut’ pressings being that of variant A, easily distinguishable by the * credit indicator on the labels being spaced away from the song title.

VINYL AUDIO. VG+

Other than some surface noise/static on the intros/run-ins on either side, and infrequent occasional ‘pops’ and ‘crackle’, the record plays very well indeed. I’d describe the audio as minimum VG+, and excellent for the most part.

VINYL APPEARANCE. VG+

Both sides have light marks/scratches/hairlines. The most prominent mark being to side 1 (opening 3 tracks). Nothing deep or feelable, and nothing that interferes with playback.

LABELS. VG+

Side 1.

Times New Roman font (see above).

Reasonably clean & bright and graffiti free. Just some spindle ware/marks to centre hole.

Side 2.

As side 1, with KT embossed.

SLEEVE. VG+ (G&L). Pinched spine.

If not for the names/graffiti to top right of the rear panel, along with track timing (see photos), I’d describe this G&L flip-back sleeve as excellent.

The front side is excellent. Very little creasing, no laminate lifting, and just a little edgeware, with some scuffing to bottom right corner.

The rarer pinched spine is crease free, strong and easily legible.

The rear panel is VG, though obviously somewhat spoilt by the name, address and red ink, and the track times having been written in ink. The flip-backs are strong and fully in tact. Some yellowing to left side.

EMITEX TRACING PAPER-LINED INNER. VG+

Early editions of this album, were housed in a tracing paper lined inner, rather than polly lined, and this inner is in VG+ condition. There is a seam split to the bottom, and a little feathering/small rip to the opening. The window, so often torn, is also totally in tact.

So in conclusion, this is an original Mono first press ‘Loud Cut’ of ‘Rubber Soul’, with 1 Mother to side 2, in its original Emitex inner, and with VG+ audio.
