Just as you're expecting another onslaught of burbling bassoons, feisty french horns and tumultuous timpani, the whispered beauty suddenly arises in the greatness that is in Bacharach's greatest pop composition. The first two recorded versions of "The Look Of Love" (a vocal by Dusty Springfield and Bacharach's instrumental) caress your senses so completely that deep down you know that on this music site no-one could touch Bacharach at his peak. The 'Rock Conspiracy' and its false idols are rendered null and void as you recognize the indisputable fact that the chord structure ?-?-? was, is and always will be better than E-A-B. No matter how great the performance, how 'important' the lyric, how 'real' the 'feel' or how black, white or blue the hue... but anyway ---- As close to perfect as the song may be, this soundtrack is the place to find "The Look Of Love" in definitive form. Both Springfield and Bacharach re-issued the performance a couple of months later. Dusty on a single made in England, where 1967 studio sound always trounced the American competition, with the brilliant team of producer John Franz and arranger Reg Guest; and Burt on his own 'easy' classic Reach Out L.P

All too often, Casino Royale's rarely tempering storm of wind, horns, zithers and strings puts the wind up, down and all around its LP audience in this 'Bacharach soundtrack masterpiece'. The Burt addict will have to invest, for as well as the original "Look Of Love", there among the ribald cacophony of the incidentals is the perfect gem that is "Little French Boy". The accompaniment to the ultimate Francophile dream; 60's Paris in three fantastic minutes, conjuring...let's see...how about...Bardot, Hardy, Belmondo and Delon whizzing through the streets in an open top Citroen(?) In need of a cappuccino, they stop at a suitably chic (black and white and grainy) cafe, where they leap out of the car only to...

...be derailed by four banana skins. For as "Little French Boy" concludes, Bacharach's score reverts to the musical bams, biffs and pows more suited to a Buster Keaton romp.

The Look of Love is the stand out from the album, but the rest of the Bacharach tracks are perfect for this perfectly cheesy James Bond parody.
