ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This superb and rare LP from Angel · EMI (DS-549276, US pressing, yellow/black Angel label, DDD stereo) features the wonderful Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg in a program of violin concertante works, the centerpiece of which is a daringly individual, and highly charismatic, performance of Mendelssohn’s evergreen Violin Concerto in E minor Op. 64.

Filling out the disc are equally captivating renditions of Saint-Saëns’ Havanaise in E Major Op. 82 and the Introduction & Rondo Capriccioso in A minor Op. 28, as well as the Méditation from Massenet’s Thaïs.

Wrote the eminent critic Edward Greenfield in his review for the March 1990 issue of The Gramophone: “With her light, bright silvery tone Salerno-Sonnenberg brings out the poetry of the two Saint-Saens concertante pieces, avoiding schmaltzy exaggeration. Far more than in the concerto, the playing gains from the slight distancing of the sound, and the Massenet brings the most poetic performance on the disc, marked by wonderfully hushed pianissimos.”

Warmly recorded at the Sommer Center for the Performing Arts, Concordia College, Bronxville, New York in 1987, Salerno-Sonnenberg is provided echt accompaniment by conductor Gerard Schwarz and the New York Chamber Symphony.

This album was produced by Patti Laursen and engineered by John Newton. The striking cover photo of Salerno-Sonnenberg was taken by Christian Steiner. There are excellent liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket, still largely in the original shrinkwrap, is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the jacket appears virtually as new. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a truly fine collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really this is a very fine copy and playback is truly superb. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a very fine collector's copy.
