DEEP PURPLE: "Who Do We Think We Are" LP, UK FIRST PRESSING, ISSUED 10th FEBRUARY,1973.
I AM REFERRING A FIRST PRESSING  IN THE DIRECT RELATIONSHIP TO THE OVERALL MANUFACTURING FROM THE
DAY OF RELEASE, TO A REASONABLE POSITION IN THE VINYL MANUFACTURING DURING THE CHARTING PERIOD.
THE QUICK, EASIEST IDENTIFICATION BETWEEN THE 'VERY FIRST 'AND FIRST PRESSINGS IS:

COMPARATIVELY FEW VERY FIRST PRESSINGS HAD LABEL RIM TEXT; "The Gramophone Co. Ltd." AT 10 O' CLOCK
IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING FIRST PRESSINGS HAD LABEL RIM TEXT; "EMI Record Company" AT 10 O' CLOCK

THIS IS A FIRST PRESSING THAT SEAMLESSLY FOLLOWED IN AN UNBROKEN PRESSING SEQUENCE WITH:
"EMI Record Company" AT 10 O' CLOCK

The above is all about clearly identifying the very first pressings made, the middle section of the manufacturing and then the
final date an album or single resides in the charts for consecutive weeks.  So much utter nonsense is circulating on the internet
and in particular, ebay, I am giving my personal opinion, a professional record seller's opinion, formed before the internet and
ebay even existed.   Recognised and authorised UK Chart books are the one and only irrefutable factual book that cannot be
disputed, they have accurate records of the first UK chart entry, the weeks residing in the chart in an unbroken sequence, and
any re-entries in following weeks, months or decades.  
Any re-entries and identified and classed as 're-issues' / 'second / third etc. pressings, have to register a preset minimum time
  of sustaining enough sales to become 'a charting single or an album'.  That requires a minimum of seven days to be registered for
  any charting entries, hence the weeks spent in the charts are always without any other time period, even six days is discounted.
  Some records have unique features that make identifying the very first pressings very simple, without solid, long term experience
  confusion on the internet has led to completely misleading ebay listings.  The very first pressings of "Who Do We Think We Are"
  does have four readily made, easily to identify features, the label rim text and actual shape of the cover, here are the facts,
  figures and features, nothing too major because the vinyl itself was obviously identical in weight, thickness, sound and the mix.
 

  "Who Do We Think We Are" was released on the 10th February,1973.
 
  The album peaked at No.4 in the UK charts, requiring a huge volume of manufacturing all printed items and vinyl production before
  the 10th February,1973.  Once again that is a statement that can be verified by cold facts, Chart Books show the chart entry was
  was made in the minimum of that seven days to register, on the 17th February, 1973.
 
  The UK chart duration was a consecutive 11 weeks, or ending approximately on the 14th May,1973.
 

  The very first pressings fell in the final weeks of EMI's 1960's label rim text for their own credit as "The Gramophone Co. Ltd."
  located at 10 o'clock.  All immediately following label text on the unbroken initial vinyl pressing sequence, in exactly the same
  10 o'clock position, was changed to"EMI Record Company."  Regarding the maitrix of genuine first pressings, from the very first
  made, through the middle section to the final chart duration records, that was monitored and adhered to just as strictly as EMI's
  own meticulous indexing.  I will get to it soon and how even the very first pressing's sound engineer was unavailable, even that
  was hand written alongside the machine stamped maitrix.
 
1.) THE VERY FIRST PRESSING HAD "The Gramophone Co. Ltd." LABEL RIM TEXT HAD;  AT 10 O'CLOCK.
THIS RECORD IS A FIRST PRESSING WITH "EMI Record Company" LABEL RIM TEXT  AT THE SAME 10 O'CLOCK.
Only four weeks after "Who Do We Think We Are" was released, EMI deleted "The Gramophone Co. Ltd." label rim text and changed it
to "EMI Record Company."   That did not happen overnight, a massive corporation like EMI planned new label text well in advance,
and as ever all record labels simply had to be printed well in advance of pressing the vinyl, new templates were required for the
printer.  28 days is nothing when the requirement was producing a small mountain for an album reaching No.4 in the charts, there
was one other label change on the 'Garrod & Lofthouse' templates for all related EMI labels. The month of introduction was March,
1973, the printing, packaging and delivery of the boxes to EMI's Hayes, Middlsex pressing plant, was mostly likely in February.
On those freshly made templates one other small change was made, we enter the trivial here but accuracy is always preferable to
wild guesses and manipulatively just making it up.

2.) THE VERY FIRST PRESSING STILL HAD THE "MADE IN GT BRITAIN" LABEL RIM TEXT AT 6 'O CLOCK;  
THIS RECORD HAS MADE IN "GT BRITAIN" TEXT MOVED TO END OF THE LINE AT 4 'O CLOCK;
I did say trivial but a change....is a change and it belongs among these specific, accurate pressing and printing details, I do
the same for 1960's EMI records, the pattern remained unchanged whenever label text was regularly undergoing  alterations.


TEXTURED PURPLE RECORDS LABEL: TPSA 7508
.   The white sections include the entire area around the spindle hole, normally full of greasy finger prints, stained from constant
handling, that does not apply here!  Still same pure white of 43 years ago, completely unaged without any no spindle alignment
traces, a stunning unplayed "Who Do We Think We Are." Please see my picture of Side 1's label for the substantial amount of  
  delicate flakes/ shavings of vinyl in the spindle hole, showing up perfectly against the central white section of the letter 'P.'
 
    MAITRIX: TPSA 7508  A - 3U  /  TPSA 7508 B - 3U
The starting point of the very first pressings was an ending of  'A - 1U / B - 1U,' as a No.4 big selling album, the digits after
  the letter 'U would rise and rise, this record has had two digit increases per side and is positively a first pressing.
 
  MASTERING DETAILS ARE EXPECTED FROM MOST VERY FIRST PRESSINGS, THOSE COMPARATIVELY FEW ALSO HAD IN
  THE RUN-OUT GROOVES, TWO LOGO'S OF GEORGE PECKHAM, THE ACTUAL RECORDING ENGINEER WAS MARTIN BIRCH.
I FULLY EXPECT THE VERY FIRST  PRESSINGS WITH "The Gramophone Co. Ltd"  AT 10 O'CLOCK TO HAVE:
SIDE 1,HANDWRITTEN:  "PORKY"
SIDE 2, HANDWRITTEN: "PURPLE PECKIE
 
    3.) THE NEXT MASTERING LOGO WAS "ARUN" HAND SCRIBED IN THE RUN-OUT GROOVES ON BOTH SIDES, BY NOW
  THE MAITRIX DIGIT INCREMENTS ARE SIMILAR TO THIS RECORD'S 'A - 3U /  B - 3U' MAITRIX ENDINGS.
   A  year earlier in 1972, highly regarded vinyl cutter, Arun Chakraverty, was responsible for the incredible sound on Lou Reed's
masterpiece, "Transformer",he is  often credited as the sole sound engineer of "Who Do We Think We Are" by websites.  Last year
I sold a Mint. "Who Do We Think We Are" very first pressing on ebay with 'Gramophone Co. Ltd." etc. close up pictures of George
Peckham logo's proved two top UK vinyl cutters were involved.  The album was completed in 1972, normal procedure when LP's made
the Top 20, let alone the Top 5 charts.   Arun Chakraverty would become a regular at 'Master Room Company Limited' in London from
the late 1970's, his logo is found on records mastered in that studio, who's own 'Master Room' logo is often seen on EMI records.
Not playing this ultimate condition record has given me the opportunity to really get into the finite pressing details, just like
Pink Floyd's March,1973, "Dark Side Of The Moon" only initial very first pressings had "Gramophone Co. Ltd" & "Made In Gt Britain"
in the same described label positions, that also had label design changes and a slightly different finish to the comparitively
few very first pressing "Dark Side" gatefold covers.

EMI STAMPING CODES:  GG 1 / GO 1
For anyone acquainted with EMI coded stamping's will instantly recognise a very first pressing, I could have just gone with the
fact both sides were pressed from the very first mothers per side, especially the low numerical order it was made.  This alone
proves the actual vinyl was pressed after the two overlapping label text pair, yes, there was a definite time sequence to the
labels and the covers but not to the vinyl.  Records are stamped at the very point of creation, when the vinyl is still molten, the
printing is made much earlier, stacked and boxed.   How accurate were EMI's sound engineers?  Be it 'Porky' or "Arun, " EMI were
like a beacon shining brightly in 1973, Britain was brought to it's knees with social unrest of strikes, unemployment,electricity
cuts, oil shortages and petrol rationing at the pumps, yet  tiny '1' digits nobody who bought the records even noticed in 1973,
was rigidly stamped accurately, the significance of '1' on both sides is now being noticed in 2016!
 

  FIRST ISSUE ONLY, 12" x 12" LYRICS INSERT, THE FRONT IS PRINTED ON SEMI-GLOSSY PURPLE PAPER,
  AND PLAIN WHITE ON THE BACK.
Like the record, the insert has never been removed from the cover, not used or handled, unscuffed, unaged with perfectly straight
  crisp edges and corners.  Allowing for being inside with the record because the front compartment was sealed, a light impression
  only and therefore as close to brand new it possibly gets.
ISSUED WITH FIRST PRESSINGS ONLY, "Who Do We Think We Are" INSERT IS IN MINT- CONDITION.
 
 
  ORIGINAL 1973, EMI / Purple LABEL INNER SLEEVE,  AS AN UNPLAYED RECORD I CAN STATE THIS IS THE
  ACTUAL SLEEVE IT WAS FIRST PLACED INSIDE AT EMI'S PRESSING PLANT.
Unused, unsplit and unworn with a record impression and a few related light creases and a touch of natural ageing after 43 years.
THE INNER SLEEVE IS IN UNUSED, MINT- CONDITION.
 

  4.) "Garrod & Lofthouse" PRINTED FIRST GATEFOLD COVER, WITH DELUXE THICK, ULTRA GLOSSY LAMINATION.
  VERY FIRST EDITION SHAPES DIFFERED SLIGHTLY, THE TOP FRONT HAD A BOWED SHAPE.  LIKE COUNTLESS FIRST
ISSUE COVERS IN THE 60's & 70's, RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING A FEW OR ONE FEATURE EVOLVED INTO A VERSION
MOST PEOPLE BOUGHT.  ONCE AGAIN A VERY SMALL DIFFERENCE AND MOST SURVIVING VERY FIRST COVERS HAVE
BEEN SQUASHED FLAT FROM USE AND UNCARING STORAGE.   THE COPY AND I SOLD LAST YEAR ALSO DID, I COULD
NOT WRITE THIS DESCRIPTION WITHOUT INCLUDING THEY EXISTED IN EARLY 1973.

  THIS COVER HAS THE SAME DELUXE ULTRA GLOSSY LAMINATION OUTSIDE, WITH THE TOP FRONT BOWED, MY
   PICTURE OF THE FRONT SHOWS THAT SHAPE, SUNLIGHT REFLECTS IN AN ARCH POINTING TO TOWARDS  THE
  TOP RIGHT CORNER.  NOT ALL HAD THIS DESIGN COVER THOUGH FOR THIS PRESSING STAGE, MOST WERE IN
  A STANDARD SHAPE, I INSIST ON EMPHASISING THIS IS INDEED, A FIRST ISSUE COVER, WHILE ACKNOWLEDGING
EARLIER MADE RECORDS WERE MOSTLY IN SIDE THEM.  ALL THE THE SUPERB ARTWORK COLOURS AND PRINTING
  IS IDENTICAL IN EVERY WAY, INCLUDING INSIDE THE GATEFOLD, STILL WITH EMI's 60's TEXT AS FOUND ON THE
DEEP PURPLE DEBUT 1968 LP, "Shades Of Deep Purple."
 
  "File Under - POPULAR ; Pop Groups" - Printed on the bottom corner inside the gatefold's right panel bottom right corner.
 
NEXT TO THE 'Garrod & Lofthouse' CREDIT IS THE DATE THE COVER WAS PRINTED; '7302' = February,1973.
  INSIDE HAS A  BLACK & WHITE COLLAGE OF MUSIC NEWSPAPER HEADLINES AND STORIES.  MAYBE 'LIGHT GREY'
  WOULD BE MORE ACCURATE, THEY ARE ACTUAL NEWSPAPER SOURCED AND THE COLOUR IS A PALE GREY COLOUR
  THE DELUXE QUALITY OF THE COVER, INCLUDING ULTRA GLOSSY LAMINATION ON THE OUTSIDE,  UNUSED AND
  PERFECTLY STORED, THE LAMINATE IS STILL ULTRA GLOSSY OVER THOSE UNFADED, DEEP COLOURS.
 

  The cover was never unused and perfectly stored inside a plastic outer sleeve, there is no wear or ageing to any part of this
  stunning condition gatefold cover, fantastic as new, glossy lamination, untouched and undulled.  A record impression and a few
  related tiny edge lines complete any natural standing in storage for 42 years, there can only be one grading for such a beautiful
  condition "Who Do We Think We Are" first issue gatefold cover. If anything my pictures fail to do this full justice, it looks and
  feels like brand new.

I have put so much effort into the pressing and pressing details, a brief background would be a good idea, for all the typing I
must first say how pleased I am to delighted to fully describe a first pressing in the ultimate unplayed, true Mint condition.
Right, some brief album details, after the 1972 "Machine Head", the line-up of Deep Purple affectionately known as 'Mark 2',
recorded what would turn out to be their final album, allowing for reforming in 1984 of course.  One slip and I get an email or
two!  If you think this is easy for a worldwide internet, try it some time, it really is daunting to even attempt the basic's but
I can only do my best and I rely on memories, very clear ones though.   For anyone new to the band's 1970's albums, although
they used the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio, this was not one of the many live Deep Purple album, they were following a new
trend, recording studio albums in various countries around the world.   In the summer of 1972, Rome was the location and it
was completed on the Stones Mobile Studio in Frankfurt, October of the same year.  I suppose the most loved track would be
"Woman From Tokyo", one of the earliest tracks recorded in that summer and it was written about their first tour of Japan.
I know many fans immediately look backwards to the previous albums, they were very special but "Who Do We Think We Are"
was as well, just because the sales were lower it did not reflect on the material or the band's performances, personally I love
the whole LP and had to make a hard choice about which lyrics to represent it with.  Perhaps "Mary Long" has been overlooked
because the track does not register as being very funny, the name was a pun on a real lady named Mary Whitehouse who took
it upon herself to campaign against anything hinting at the so called promiscuous 1960's.   With a steely determination to purge
all our sins by stopping any hint of nudity, sex or swearing ever being allowed to corrupt us on the radio, television or any other
media.  Perhaps if that was unknown, re-read the lyrics and re-listen to the track and it will all fall into place.  As I was saying,
the line-up generally regarded as the ultimate Deep Purple were at their very peak and recorded a stunning album, the actual
sound had the fullest dynamics and that created a truly outstanding record.  Summing up the importance of the first pressings,
with so many details required to qualify, few actually are!  I must include how this will have stunning 'sound' as a first pressing
sourced from the first mothers on both sides.  Making the printing info almost redundant, but essential as far as I am concerned.
  The final album by Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice, that's worth hearing at it's most potent
from a Mint record, a really beautiful unworn cover becomes something of a bonus.  Vocalist Ian Gillan left just after this album
was issued, the reasons are unknown really, rumours blamed individuals within the band, the management and constant touring,
perhaps a little of everything led to Ian walking away.  Roger Glover picked up his bass and did likewise, that was the negative
side but the album itself contained real gems like "Place In Line" and "Rat Bat Blue,"  the incredible "Our Lady" found the band
at that peak of creativity, it was a shame Ian left because his vocals on "Our Lady" were as inspired as Jon Lord's superb organ
on the track, I would have loved playing and describing the album in full.
