"INTO THE VOID"  (Tony Iommi / Bill Ward / Geezer Butler / Ozzy Osbourne)

Rocket engines burning fuel so fast,
Up into the night sky they blast,
Through the universe the engines whine,
Could it be the end of man and time?
Back on Earth the flame of life burns low,
Everywhere is misery and woe,
Pollution kills the air, the land and sea,
Man prepares to meet his destiny.

Rocket engines burning fuel so fast,
Up into the black sky so vast,
Burning metal through the atmosphere,
Earth remains in worry, hate and fear,
With the hateful battles raging on,
Rockets flying to the glowing sun,
Through the empires of eternal void,
Freedom from the final suicide.

Freedom fighters sent out to the sun,
Escape from brainwashed minds and pollution,
Leave the Earth to all its sin and hate,
Find another world where freedom waits.

Past the stars in fields of ancient void,
Through the shields of darkness where they find,
Love upon a land a world unknown,
Where the sons of freedom make their home.
Leave the Earth to Satan and his slaves,
Leave them to their future in their grave,
Make a home where love is there to stay,
Peace and happiness in every day.

JUNE 1971, VERY FIRST FULLY LAMINATED, BOX SHAPE VERTIGO SWIRL COVER, WITH A TUCKED IN TOP AND
  BOTTOM FLAP.
The other Vertigo Swirl "Black Sabbath"gatefold covers are notorious for the artwork fading and wearing badly, suffering from the
severest form of ring wear of all time.  In theory this fully laminated box shape cover should have survived much better, not at
all, the design created a 'hollow' interior, unable to withstand the usual handling or even standing upright with other LP covers for
support in storage. The record and inner sleeve were not the same width as the box interior and movement inside had heavyweight
records 'rolling' into all four edges.  The poster made little difference but added some more resistance to movement, but so few
posters were made and most were removed to pin up on a wall.  I am always honest about cover design but that is because of my
duty to accurately assess them after periods as long as this album's 45 years of age.  A hardly used record certainly contributed
to the outstanding all round condition, undulled deeply glossy lamination is enhancing the wonderful embossed lettering in
purple and black on the front.  The back has the same purple "Black Sabbath" at the top with the track list complete with full
lyrics and credits etc. printed in white.  Totally unaged and the the top and bottom flaps were barely used and that means no
worn out lamination with fraying edges there on the three folds required to fit into the space.  The purple colour is as vividly
and deeply toned as in 1971, in fact, everything here is 100% connected to the design itself. Trying to fix laminate around a box
shape cover was extremely difficult, because of the two square shaped spines and of course, the top and bottom flaps of cardboard
that tucked in, why was the bottom not glued together to create a solid standing edge? Only one opening is found on standard shape
single covers, naturally they gaped at the corners and this has that as minimally as I have ever seen.  The laminate problem with
the square shape, meant it was very hard to smooth the lamination tightly down on those square edges, not 'laminate lift' but how
they were factory finished and sold when brand new.  I know because I personally bought "Master Of Reality" in July,1971 and ever
since I have bought and sold only Near Mint / Mint first pressings.  Anyway, there are only a few very small places and the rest is
just a gentle record impression and a few related laminate edge lines.  All that is left to mention that the square shape never made it
to the end of 1971, well, in 2016 this cover has long ago settled into a 'comfortable' position just slightly angled, but I stress it is
only one side with a gentle slope.  A perfectly strong and rigid cover that should get a Near Mint grading considering the design
but I am taking all the points raised here into account.
THIS BEAUTIFUL COVER IS IN EXCELLENT+++ / NEAR MINT CONDITION.

THE RECORD WAS ONLY PLAYED FOUR TO FIVE TIMES FROM THE FAINT SPINDLE TRACES., SUCH CAREFUL PLAYS,
THE VINYL IS LIKE BRAND NEW, TOTALLY UNMARKED AND GLEAMING LIKE IT WAS PRESSED TODAY, NOT MID-1971.
WITH STUNNING SOUND QUALITY, THE RECORD IS IN MINT- CONDITION.

Recorded 5th February - 5th April 1971, At Island Studios, London.
Produced By Rodger Bain.
Trying to find early 1970's Black Sabbath records without excessive wear and horrific damage to the once perfect sound quality,
has been one of my hardest challenges as a long term record collector and professional seller.  Ever since I started selling records
I set my sights as high as I personally demand for myself, only accepting them in genuinely Excellent+++ / Near Mint means I am
not interested in just visual appearances if obviously played a few times.  When joining ebay, I carried on the same determination
to never offer their records in substandard and plain worn out condition.  "Master Of Reality" has always figured highly among my
favourite early 1970's LP's, to have just recently bought this stunning barely played first pressing,is a very exciting prospect.
For Vertigo,Phillips were usually producing only the one initial small batch of records, most of their artists never sold enough
copies to justify even such minimal amounts pressed, Black Sabbath were always requiring massive vinyl production with every
successive album.  Today the overwhelming  majority of those first pressings are no longer listenable, worn out and scratched to
the core, over the last year or so I have only located two Mint Vertigo pressings with absolutely perfect sound quality. The only
way to hear those magnificent albums, especially for the numerous beautifully melodic acoustic numbers Black Sabbath recorded.
For "Master Of Reality" it was compounded even further because the beautiful "Orchid" opened Side 2, the worst possible scenario
for any acoustic track because the stylus was constantly lowered /dropped near the intro. Plus those without the taste for a quiet
gentle interlude, just dragged needles through the grooves to locate the mind numbing guitar riff intro to "Lord Of This World",
causing horrific damage to "Orchid" and ironically drowning that amazing intro to "Lord Of This World" with loud annoying clicks
and crackles. I was mightily impressed by this first pressing, the first  few initial plays acted to run-in the record and remove
any pressing related surface sound  . Side 1 of "Master Of Reality" also presents one of the most prone to a noisy beginning I have
ever encountered for a band as heavy as Black Sabbath, Ozzy coughs before a note is heard, usually that cough is  totally lost
under a barrage of needle noise, not here!   I was blown away by such powerful but superbly clean and clear sound, the only way
to hear any Black Sabbath record, but this is surely one of the most staggering albums of all time.

Here's some background info for this, their third Vertigo album, issued in July,1971, over the last two years a great deal had
happened to Black Sabbath and the middle of 1971 was close to their debut album.  The band did not exactly timidly enter London's
Regent Sound Studios and tentatively record the tracks, they threw all convention aside and produced extraordinary sounds and
even for the late 60's decade, they just stormed into the tracks and created a real masterpiece in the process.  If I sound like a
proud old fan, I am!  Black Sabbath's formation came right at the end of the 1960's decade in 1969 they signed with  the Phillips
subsidiary label, Fontana.  Their first ever recordings were issued as a single in January,1970, the song chosen for the A-side was
"Evil Woman" with "Wicked World" on the B-side, a fantastic pair of tracks containing Black Sabbath's unique sounds.  As a new
band's debut release, it was not unusual for the single failing to sell and timing is everything, in 1969 Phillips formed the new
rock/progressive label, a now legendary 'Vertigo,' Black Sabbath made the short move over to their new label and immediately
began recording their first ever album, "Black Sabbath."  With the talented record producer Roger Bain and a low budget of only
£600, amazingly in just two days, the album was completed, mixed and ready for releasing in February,1970.  It was only logical
to try again with the failed single on the Vertigo label, an "Evil Woman" single, was pressed and released in the same February as
their debut album.  By then Black Sabbath had built up a very strong following based entirely on incredible live performances on
perpetual touring, the single failed again but "Black Sabbath" rewarded Vertigo's faith in the band, reaching a UK chart position
of No.8.  A glance at the catalogue number tells you how early this was for the Vertigo label, "Black Sabbath" was only the sixth
album issued. This and the next two albums unleashed the first true guitar heavy music, although Led Zeppelin had recently broken
new ground, their first two albums in 1969 were far more blues orientated than heavy rock. By 1970 and 1970 Led Zeppelin were
equally into acoustic folk music as well as heavy rock Then there was of course a certain lead singer known as Ozzy!  For the
Phillips owned Vertigo label that was the purpose it had been founded for, but most of their other signing's were fated to remain
unknown.  At last the record companies had  woken up to giving the unproven new talent every opportunity to grow and flourish,
previously Deram, Harvest, Island and Immediate in the late 60's fulfilled that  role.  The ability to blow away their audiences
was always a secret ingredient, Black Sabbath's reputation as an amazing new live band meant their debut album reaped the
rewards of building up a following eager for their exciting and electrifying music.  That first album did exceptionally well and
made a UK chart position of No. 8 in March, 1970,  they recorded a second album, "Paranoid" was released in September, 1970.
They issued the first ever heavy metal single a few weeks before the album, the sensational "Paranoid" 45 made the UK charts then
proceeded to reach an unexpected No.4.   The "Paranoid" LP of course now became a massive success, by September,1970 it had
stormed to No.1 in the UK charts.  Black Sabbath's third album "Master Of Reality" picked up where "Paranoid" left you gasping
  for more.

The UK first issue only of "Master Of Reality" came with a laminated box cover, only a select few had a poster, this first issue
never had one.  Everything about this album is that of a very first UK pressing made, the record is still in the original Vertigo
swirl inner sleeve dated to a few weeks before the album release.  The ending of the maitrix numbers, '1 Y - 1 /  2 Y - 1,'  are
conclusively those of the Phillips pressed Vertigo very first made records. The success of both the"Paranoid" single and album
saw  Black Sabbath firmly established as a major rock band. "Master Of Reality" had a ready made and very keen audience, the
album was packed with outstanding songs and performances, elevating Black Sabbath's reputation even further. Although it did not
repeat reaching the No.1 position like the previous "Paranoid" did, but the sales were large enough for it to make No.6.  That was
45 years ago now, a top condition first pressing is far from being easily located, most originals were simply played to death in
the first few weeks of the release date alone. This is an outstanding record with absolutely stunning sound, even Side 2's
beautiful acoustic, folk track, can be fully enjoyed because "Orchid" does the customary horrific noise that totally ruins the
mood.  A record without anything to affect the sound reproduction, including none of the awful distortion problem so common to
"Master Of Reality," because of how loudly the very first UK pressings were mastered.  The sound is extremely powerful, yet not
distorted, remaining crystal clear and virtually without any static beyond the natural to vinyl, every track plays precisely as
it was pressed back in 1971.

From near silent run-in grooves, yes near silent even when that heavily echoed cough introduces "Sweet Leaf,"  there is not the
the usual volcanic like crackles and clicks.  As you would expect in 1971, the cough is heard in true stereo panning  effects as
it travels from the right across to the left speaker, this is the incredible first UK stereo mix!  So if you've become used to the
re-issues, remastering or CD's, imagine the phenomenal and sensory stereo during the music! Then a massively heavy guitar riff
erupts in fantastic power and volume, Ozzy says,"All right now," all is heard in that staggering volume I mentioned mastered into
these deep grooves.  From totally unworn vinyl and music signals, there is no surface sound on the heavily reverbed cough or on
the spoken invitation to let rip with the actual musical intro. Ozzy's vocal is in just as colossal volume, a main feature of this
album, Geezer's bass guitar is just as thunderously loud,  at wall shaking volume and that causes such horrific distortion from
the average condition originals.  Even with a hefty boost to my already high volume up to an extremely loud setting, all remains
crystal clear and as perfectly defined audio.  Tony Iommi's lead guitar becomes a mighty force joined here by Geezer's bass and
Bill's drums to create a stunning wall of mind blowing heavy sounds, with tremendous vocals also adding to the sheer impact of
a fantastic opening track.  Perfect clarity is unaffected by the powerful sound, I insist on the same incredible standard I grew
to expect and love in 1971, why should anyone have to suffer hearing Black Sabbath any differently to that? Records are a time
machine and they can transport you back to when we first heard this astonishing music, I would never abuse that and take great
pride in being in the position of being qualified to say, this is playing perfectly as only unworn vinyl can.  I never set out to
write this much for just one track and I will make an  effort to keep things shorter, I always try to but when playing favourite
albums I do tend to get carried away. "Sweet Leaf" fades out very slowly and there's no surface sound / noise in the gap, quite
astonishing really but that means the exposed intro to a brilliant"After Forever" is supremely clean and ultra clear. The lyrics
are just amazing and the're most certainly not the philosophical thoughts about death and religious beliefs most associate with
Black Sabbath, so I can't resist including a taste of them:
"Is your mind so small that you have to fall in with the pack wherever they run.
Will you still sneer when death is near, and say they may as well worship the sun?
I think it was true, it was people like you that crucified Christ".
They are hardly the lyrics of 'demon worshipers,' Black Sabbath are the most misunderstood band in the history of rock music,
sure they lived life to the very fullest and they enjoyed every excess known to rock musicians.  Ozzy's reputation was not just a
figment of the music press imagination, you name it and he took it, but he was still not exactly sacrificing goats at black magic
gathering's!  Check out the lyrics on any of these early albums and they stand up against any of those intellectual posers this
new decade was now awash with. Pumping out an electrifying, adrenaline charged music, wasn't avante garde or 'progressive' but
it sure did rock!  Those lyrics are sung to a really heavy, relentless rock riff and there is also a superb melodic part to this
song as well and Ozzy's unique vocals are brilliantly delivered, the first stereo mix is just stunning, adding a colossal impact
to this sublime track, enhanced with some outstanding stereo panning effects. Finishing with a sound effect, once again without
any form of surface sound in the next gap, this really is a truly a staggering playing record!  My grading reflects those low
plays and a minus was not really necessary, this has the appearance and sound of a Mint record.  Moving into that magnificent,
"Embryo," a very short but  beautiful instrumental with fantastic harmonics created from the guitars, it is almost like the sound
of eerie violins.  Without really a break Geezer's awesome bass guitar has unbelievable volume as he plays the great intro for
"Children of The Grave". Re-emphasing even more inspiredly written lyrics, telling about the horrors of atomic weapons and their
long term effects on the future generations.  The sound here is sheer perfection with that lethal mixture of overwhelming power
and absolutely perfect audio clarity.  They tear into this with full out energy, the bass and drums never relent during the the
incessant rhythm. Tony Iommi plays a staggering blues solo, there are plenty of of those fantastic stereo panning effects on this
incredible track.  At the end the eerie sound effects work perfectly, as very dramatically, with his voice almost like a whisper,
Ozzy says,"Children of The Grave."  You can understand how this song was incorrectly thought to be about a morbid graveyard, or
some black magic references. In reality the song was one of the greatest anti-nuclear war statements recorded, that last section
is very quiet and there is the first merest sensation this is indeed vinyl.  Records did came pressed with a little background sound
I am talking next to nothing for split seconds.  I dislike such negative comments because this whole side has been spectacular
for having nothing but the music, most importantly that music was ultra sharp edged on one of the cleanest first pressings I have
 ever heard.

Side 2's run-in grooves are so close to naming completely silent, they are touching it, they need to be because the very exposed
to noise intro to"Orchid," with only lovely acoustic guitars.  In fact, they are the only instruments played for around 3 minutes
on a really beautiful folk style song and the sound quality is incredible, the guitar notes are real to life without any surface
sound for the whole of  of "Orchid,"  once that includes my volume remaining at full blast!  It's only in the closing to seconds
I can just about tell this is indeed a record, vinyl will only ever play as it did in it's own era, by knowing these records from
back then.  So essential and that gives me a massive advantage when assessing the sound reproduction and being able to judge
if I am hearing pressing plant in-built pressing sounds. I have previously stated in every description of the first pressing's of
"Master Of Reality", they all had some degree of low level static, but this individual record gets as close to sheer perfection
as you will ever hear "Orchid".  Which is another shortish instrumental, now a staggering Tony Iommi electric guitar intro
explodes with astounding power, we have arrived at the awesome "Lord Of The World".  Terrific wall shaking, ultra heavy rock
in this powerful sound can disintegrate into terrible distortion, positively not on any part of this record! "Lord Of The World"
has outstanding sound quality and the drums are just exceptionally loud, laying down the rock solid foundation for the guitars
to build from.  Ozzy Osborne was in such remarkable vocal form in 1971,"Lord Of The World" is one of many tracks that always make
"Master Of Reality" such a fantastic album to play, here I am after all those years still being blown away by every second!
"Solitude" is another purely acoustic folk song with a beautiful melody, all Black Sabbath LP's were more than just very heavy
screaming electric guitars. The instruments here are acoustic apart from a gently played electric guitar, with a flute adding to
a lovely atmospheric song.  Truly great albums have variety to the music and on "Solitude," Black Sabbath show their versatility
as musicians.  The sound for this very quietly played track is just stunning, including starting from a completely silent gap, I
will need to repeat this is vinyl with absolutely minimal natural static only just about audible in the very quietest moments.
For my own enjoyment during descriptions, this is a real pleasure to hear a loved album in such ultra sharp edged sound quality.
In truth I would not even notice such trivial insignificant, way off in the distance hint of static, as ever, I have learnt to
detach myself from music sounding quite correct for a specific pressing and to write as accurately, impartially and honestly as
I possibly can.  The beautiful flute and the bells gradually fade away, the gentleness here is wonderful, there has been so little
natural static right up to the last bell fading, so a  silent gap here means a perfectly clean intro for, "Into The Void."  Tony
Iommi's single guitar now plays the intro before the bass and drums join in, this is just as exposed as "Solitude," yet there
still isn't any irritants here either.  The first 'mothers' are a first generation from the Master Tapes,  describing every track
on an album is a time consuming business but I sincerely believe detailing a record's performance provides important details for
potential buyers.  I often sell unplayed records and usually feel obliged to offer them without my intervention, if anything I
love to sell hardly played records because I get to hear them.  Back to the final amazing track,"Into The Void"now returns to
flat out, mind blowing rock music with some really blistering Tony Iommi guitar playing!  One of Tony's really pile driving riffs
that Sabbath built on to create their own brand of very heavy rock, it also has simply  incredible blues guitar.  The lyrics are
genuinely very concerned about pollution and our planet's ecology, they were sung with real venom by Ozzy.  Such incredible
lyrics, I chose then to type in full, so if you are reading this and have yet to hear "Into The Void", please see the top of this
page and read just how perceptive they were. Fourty five years later ,  very chillingly they have come true, global warming has
become a reality now, the pollution Ozzy sings about here, is threatening the Earth and every single living creature and plant.
Warnings about the dangers to our world were being given by concerned artists in the early 1970's, but nobody was listening back
then, Neil Young sung "Look at Mother Nature on the run in the 1970's," if slightly more gently than Ozzy! The most chilling part
of the lyrics foretell of Man having to find another planet after the Earth can no longer support life,  we are now moving very
rapidly towards the  need to turn Science Fiction into reality.  "Into The Void" has really powerful and immaculate sound quality
without any surface sound beyond vinyl's natural on this wonderful last track.

    R & M RECORDS.

My lifetime's love of music and records began at a very young age, the arrival of the Beatles and the 1960's decade
in general had a very profound effect. It was only natural to bring all my first hand experience of collecting vinyl
into becoming a professional record seller.  Nearly thirty years ago we entered into the wonderful atmosphere
of record fairs with the highest possible standards set. When the Internet became the world's new market place for
vinyl, in 2001 it was time to join ebay. Those standards were rigidly adhered to as they will always continue to be,
the basics of honesty and integrity were very much part of the era the music I love originated in, so here is our friendly
and very efficient service we are proud to provide;

We have kept all our charges at the same level for years now, but due to the Post Office's new price increases, regretfully we
will have to increase the cost of LP's, however, singles will remain unchanged.  Ebay were aware of that happening and have
increased their minimum postal cost for LP's to £7.00, that figure has been enforced by the UK Post Office and it will become
our UK First Class, Recorded Delivery cost for albums up to the value of £46.  A temporary reduction this week means we can
now post LP's for £5, but who knows how long before the Post Office return to £7?

For LP's valued above £46, the cost will be £9, we are unhappy about either increase but our high standard of packaging has meant
in 13 years of ebay trading, there has not been one record damaged, we are determined to maintain that in the present and future.

IN THE UK RECORDS UP TO THE VALUE OF £46 WILL BE SENT RECORDED DELIVERY, OVER £46 WILL BE
