This was the Spinners' first album. They previously recorded for Harvey & Gwen Fuqua's Tri-Phi label but only released a handful of singles, and no LPs, from May 1961 to December 1962. The confusing title leads you to believe that the guys had been around the recording scene much longer. Bobby Smith, Henry Fambrough, Billy Henderson, Pervis Jackson, and Chico Edwards were the original Spinners. This LP is a collection of Spinners Motown singles and flips augmented by a few new tracks; unfortunately, none of the Tri-Phi sides are present. Bobby Smith leads every cut, he's the lead on "I'll Be Around," the groups' first Atlantic Records hit. Motown producers were not fond of Smith's leads, surmising that his second tenor was too weak to sell a song. Light voice or not, he sounded glorious on the right material, especially "That's What Girls are Made For." Single releases "I'll Always Love You" and "Truly Yours" were classic Motown concoctions, with witty lyrics, pounding beats, and arresting vocals; "Where Is That Girl," the flip of "Truly," would have done well as an A-side, as the guys never sounded better than they did on this lamenting ballad. A good update of "For All We Know" sounds delicious and made a wee bit of noise as a 45; likewise for "Sweet Thing," where Bobby Smith's vocal is awash in sentiment and unabashed romanticism. The fastest song here is "I Just Can't Help But Feel the Pain," an uptempo saga that features the high end of the Spinners' harmony. Grab this one if you can find it; for many, these are the real Spinners. A CD featuring these cuts and the Tri-Phi sides would be greatly appreciated.

On the face of it, The Original Spinners is a fairly typical mid-sixties Motown album, made up from singles and filler. All the group's previously-released Motown singles are included, along with their respective B-sides. Their previous 45, For All We Know was in there, plus B-side of course. Even the 1961 That's What Girls Are Made For was thrown in for good measure. It's fairly obvious that there was not a great deal of material to compile an album from, which in turn suggests that the Spinners were not frequent visitors to the studio. Having said all of that, it is truly a vintage album, and quite possibly one of the great Soul vocal group recordings of all time. What the Spinners lacked in quantity of output, is more than compensated for by the quality of the performances. The Tops and the Temps may have had the hits, but the Spinners had the class! The Original Spinners was not exactly a hot seller at the time, which is why original copies are serious collectors' items today.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

 

(b)          The record comes in the original stock inner sleeve.

 

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

 

(d)            The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

 

(e)             Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 5:1.

 

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2    (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .

 

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
