Cactus was a great hard rock band. Arguably, their rythm section was even better than that of Led Zeppelin, their guitarist was almost as strong as Page and their singer had a voice that suited the hard rock material better than Plant's. No, I'm not saying they deserved to be greater than Led Zeppelin. They where a more limited band, with weaker material. However, for anyone interested in the genre och the era, they are well worth checking out. This is probably their best studio album. It's a bit uneven, but contains some of their best material, notably their take on Evil, which more or less defines the concept of hard rock. The title track and Guiltless Glider are among their most ambitious songs and Mean Night in Cleveland is a great little fraction of a blues.

This is definitely their best album. I've been listening to it on and off since it first came out and it's still fun. "Evil" gives the full Led Zeppelin treatment to a Howlin' Wolf blues classic On the strength of that I bought their box set which contained their other albums and was rather disappointed--they didn't have the sense of humor that the lyrics--often deliberately ridiculous ("Alaska") or amusing (Tokin' Chokin') over the top ("Bag Drag")--manifest here, nor is the playing in their other albums as heavy or the jamming as relentless ("Guiltless Glider") as it is here.Cactus may not be a classic band, but this is them at their very best.

(c)           The record is apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

 

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

 

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.

 

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1.

 

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the top and bottom seams (nothing significant)
