PLEASE READ BEFORE BIDDING: Please read the entire auction listing, including shipping costs, before writing to ask a question. OUR GOAL IS CUSTOMER SATISFACTION. In order to meet that goal, we will ALWAYS work with our customers on any concerns that may arise. In the unlikely instance that you feel the need to open a resolution dispute before working with us, you will immediately be blocked from any further chance to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We ALWAYS process and ship every paid order. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office. Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has become very slow. Opening a dispute for slow mail is unacceptable and will result in blocking the bidder. We work hard to provide excellent service as is represented by our 8000 plus positive feedback. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. We take Customer Service seriously, and want you to be satisfied. Please give us 5 stars in each category through the feedback system, and we will be able to effectively continue to fulfill your passion for rare and collectible music! We have served thousands of satisfied customers - far more than our feedback records indicate - and our aim is to continue to do so. Thank you for your interest and support. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SHIPPING: USA ~ 1 LP = $4.00 Media Priority rates vary by area; please inquire. 1972 RARE LOCAL DETROIT PALLADIUM RECORDS ISSUE!!
The Bob Seger System
SMOKIN' O.P.'S
USA - PALLADIUM RECORDS - P- 1006
! SCARCE ORIGINAL!
MINT CLEAN VINYL....
CLEAN and RARE original 1972 first pressing on the DETROIT LOCAL "Palladium" label = very hard to find this early pressing before Capitol Records overtook the project ...
collectors take note: we don't get clean copies of this album often. =
This is a 'top loader' meaning the record comes out of the top of the jacket...
The working title = O.P.'S = stands for SMOKIN' OTHER PEOPLE SONGS and make no mistake. in true early Seger System fashion, explosive fireworks rock-on right from the start ...However, in an interview on Detroit radio years back, Bob playfully told the D.J. the title came from "smoking orange peels", then they talked about that famous tall tale about smoking banana peels (Donovan's "Mellow Yellow"), whatever the title means doesn't matter much cause the album is a burner that surpasses other peoples songs indeed, Seger making his own powerful stamp on each track ...he even covers his own, in 'Heavy Music" and old ripper from his sixties Detroit days as a member of the legendary "Last Herd" ...The opening track just smokes away in a brilliant full throttle of Bo Diddley/Who Do You Love ///hardly a better version ever....
"If I Were A Carpenter", in particular, is stunningly powerful, and one of the greatest covers of this song recorded. Band mate Skip Knape pulls out all the stops, so to speak, on the Hammond w/ Leslie, and Bob's vocals are just amazing -- inevitably an emotionally overwhelming experience.
"Love The One You're With" is another highlight: great version with a Bo Diddley beat and a high-wire soprano co-lead vocal ...
Smokin' O.P.'s was recorded in 2 and a half days at Leon Russell's Paradise Studios in Oklahoma.
"Someday," the only Seger original, appears as cut number 8. ("Someday" is a prophetic ballad about reaching the top 'someday,' but the tone is oddly bittersweet, rather than joyful..."someday, we'll be number one, someday...then we'll smile, and raise our glasses high/and the world will know/you and I."
"Heavy Music" -- actually Heavy Music Part 1 -- is cut number 9.
Of the seven cover songs, one is "Let It Rock," which became a Seger classic in live sets.
Smokin' O.P.'s is the first Seger album to appear on Palladium Records -- a label that his manager Punch Andrews started after Seger left Capitol. The album was immediately picked up (and reissued) by Capitol.
Album highlights include:"Bo Diddley" ("Arlene grabbed me by my hand and said, 'Cool-it- Robert-you-know-you're-my-man!"), "If I Were A Carpenter," "Heavy Music," "Let it Rock" and "Someday."
