Requia simultaneously looks forwards and back. The first three songs are in the mold of his earlier work, but there is a special conviction in them; the performances carry an almost spiritual resonance. All of these songs are about people (a great-uncle, an old lover, Mississippi John Hurt) that have either left Fahey or have died. Written shortly after Hurt's death, "Requia for John Hurt" is Fahey's loveliest song. In the notes Fahey says that Hurt's style was his technical model when he was learning to play, and of course you can hear Fahey's indebtedness to Hurt in all of his songs. Yet as Fahey's imaginative variations in the simple melody slowly build to the song's conclusion, it is clear that his was a distinctive style. One thing that strikes me about Fahey is that, though obviously a technically accomplished musician, he is never ostentatious; he never takes you out of the song.

The four-part "Requiem for Molly" utilizes tape loops of various sounds - trains, singing, laughing, dogs barking, a carnival. This is his first exploration beyond traditional parameters of folk music, anticipating City of Refuge and Womblife, recorded thirty years later. It sounds a bit quaint, though this strain of his music would prove influential to later innovators like O'Rourke, the Minutemen, and others. The combination of reverence and daring is what makes this record one of Fahey's best.
