Pink Floyd : Meddle 1U / 1U 1st Press
This first pressing plays with wonderful quality on both sides with only minimal interference on the 'One Of These Days' intro which is common anyway. It lasts for only a few seconds. The remainder of the side is practically 'as new' and as for the classic 'Echoes' on S2? Wow! The sonic quality is outstanding and with only one very light click the clarity can hardly be faulted. I have sold a number of first pressings over the years but this version is certainly up there with the best, it is STUNNING! The vinyl is also very impressive visually and has clearly been looked after down the years.
As this is a first pressing the cover is more heavily textured than later editions and it has been preserved so well over the last 50+ years and is easily one of the finest examples I have seen. The original Harvest inner is also in excellent condition with barely any wear.
With international shipping (including Europe now) I will declare a lower amount so as to decrease/avoid any Customs' fees.
SHVL 795 // A - 1U / B - 1U // PA 2 / TP 1 4
The audio on S1 is Mint- (Track 1 intro Ex- then Near Mint for the remainder)
The audio on S2 is Near Mint (Mint- for the majority)
The fully textured gatefold is Ex++
The labels are Near Mint-
The original Harvest inner is Ex+
Visual grading
The vinyl is in lovely condition and retains a very healthy glossy sheen with no marks or scuffs. There is one small scratchy type mark on the lead in grooves on S1 but has very little impact on the playing surface. Both sides are very clean and have only a small number of very faint hairlines and is certainly one of the 'cleanest' first pressings I have seen. There is some spindle wear albeit not an excessive amount but this has not affected the sonic quality in any way. It can only have been played on 'high end' equipment. The run out grooves are very clean as are the yellow/green Harvest labels which are unmarked and have lost none of their original colouring.
Play grading There are four clicks on the lead in grooves but that is obviously before the music starts. The first few seconds of 'One Of These Days' then plays with only 3/4 light ticks and minimal static. This intro is of course so quiet and rarely plays with perfect audio. Soon after the classic bass line comes in the playback is superb and there are only a couple of minor ticks during the mid bass section. As the track builds the audio is outstanding and there are no negatives, the clarity and power here is phenomenal. For once the final 'wind' section has barely any static and if the intro is Ex- then the remainder is Near Mint for sure.
'A Pillow Of Winds' plays beautifully from start to finish. The clarity is absolutely stunning and there is no intrusion aside from one mega light tick but blink and you miss it! There are no ticks, clicks or pops and no underlying static either. The long fade has no 'background' and Mint- is very much deserved.
The intro on 'Fearless' is 'as new' and the first vocal is equally as impressive. It continues to play with wonderful clarity with only a small number of barely audible dust ticks in the mid instrumental. Thereafter it plays with stunning precision and I cannot believe just how 'clean' the audio is here. Each note is so precise and there is no 'muddiness' to the sound, this is a record that has certainly not been over-played. The 'You'll Never Walk Alone' end section is flawless and again Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio.
'San Tropez' is of the same 'high end' standard with no 'background' of any kind. In fact the audio is 'as new' so no minus is required here. A Mint version I am pleased to say.
The final track 'Seamus' often plays with a fair amount of interference I find and yet the clarity here is stunning from the first note to the last. It plays with exceptional quality and provides a Mint finish to the side.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 'sonar' intro on 'Echoes' for once plays so clearly with no interference and may well be the finest start to this classic that I have ever heard! There is no static, obviously no clicks or pops and only a couple of dust ticks at most. It is so 'clean' and we all know just how rare this is - in essence it could not play any better! This standard is kept up as Gilmour's guitar comes in with only a small number of barely audible dust ticks - why I mention them I do not know as you will find them on any vinyl, even one pressed yesterday and they do not qualify as 'background'! The first vocal section is 'as new' and there is just one light click in the instrumental section that follows. The second verse is again faultless and I cannot overstate just how impressive the audio is here. The first long instrumental piece is a prime example of - the clarity and depth is exceptional. There is no underlying static and it just could not play any better, it is STUNNING! The first part of the 'whale' section has only 3/4 mega light dust ticks and it continues in the same exact way. Wow this is good! No ticks, clicks or pops and as you reach the conclusion of this section the audio still plays with genuine quality. A couple of mega light static ticks that is all and totally non-intrusive. The following section is nigh on perfect and again I am in awe of the clarity! As the music builds there is no let up in quality - just listen to Mason's accompanying percussion, you'll get an idea of what I mean as every note is just so sharp and precise. For once the 'jangly' Gilmour section has none of the distortion that is often associated with it and the remainder of this section builds to such a crescendo - the strength and depth of the audio is quite simply amazing! The final vocal section is flawless and that pretty much sums up the rest of this total classic. The quiet closing section plays with such precision - no interference in other words. This is one of the most 'complete' versions I have ever heard and Near Mint in a way does not do it justice. However, there is that one light click a few minutes in but the majority does indeed play to a Mint standard. It is an outstanding version for sure!
In summary this stunning first press plays to a standard you so rarely find today. The clarity, definition and warmth of the audio is so impressive and that is very prevalent on S2. Echoes is unequivocally one of the finest examples I have ever had the pleasure in listening to with a sonic quality that is out of this world! Oh and S1 is rather good too! Yes a little 'background' right at the start but that is common and the rest of the side plays with stunning precision. This 'high end' quality is, like I say, hard to find today and especially on a genuine first 1U/1U pressing. The Gatefold & Inner Sleeve
The cover is in lovely condition and being a 'first press' one it is heavily textured both inside and out. The edges are so clean with barely any rubbing and for once the wide spine is also in superb order. It is still 100% legible and is not compressed in any way and has no wear on the corners. The right hand corners have no obvious wear and the opening edge is close to perfect. The only 'real' wear is a minor 'white' scuff that you can see on the bottom corner of the front cover but otherwise it is exceptionally clean with no marking or creasing and the back cover is even better! The textured inside is more than likely the finest I have seen and has retained its original 'white' colour so well - how rare is that?! There is no marking or fading and the inner spine is also in pristine condition. This is a stunning example of this cover which, as we all know, is so often found in poor condition. One of the best this one!
The original poly-lined Harvest inner is in superb order with no side splits or marking and only one tiny 'nick' on the top edge. There is only minimal creasing and only a little age related fading around the edges.
