Record Grading

Mint (M): Absolutely perfect in every way, never played, possibly even still sealed.

Near Mint (NM): A nearly perfect record. The record should show no obvious signs of wear. The jacket should have no creases, folds, seam splits or no other noticeable similar defect. No cut-out holes or cuts. Also, the same should be true of any other inserts, such as posters, lyric sheets, etc.

Excellent (EX): Generally better than VG+ but not as good as a near mint record as described above. The label has no owner names, stickers, ring wear or spindle marks. The vinyl has barely visible scuff marks and no scratches. One side may even be closer to near mint while the other side closer to VG+. The jacket has no cut-out marks (punch holes, saw cuts, etc.) and no writing (owner's name, stickers, etc.), also, there is little or no wear and was most likely protected by an outer sleeve. Also, the jacket may have some or most of the original shrink wrap.

Very Good Plus (VG+): Shows some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. Record surface may show some slight signs of wear and may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that don't affect one's listening experience. May have slight warp that does not affect play or sound. The label may have some ring wear or discoloration, but barely noticeable. The center spindle hole is not misshapen by repeated play. Picture sleeve or LP inner sleeve has some slight ring wear, lightly turned up corners, or a slight seem split. LP jacket may have some slight signs of wear and may have cut-out/punch holes or saw cuts, indicated that it was taken out of print and/or sold at a discount..

Very Good (VG): Many of the defects found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced in a VG record. Surface noise will be evident during playback, especially during soft passages and during a song's intro and fade but will not overpower the music otherwise. Has noticeable groove wear, may have light scratches (that could be deep enough to feel with a fingernail) that will affect the sound. Labels may have writing, or have tape or stickers (or their residue) attached. The same may be true of picture sleeves or LP jacket covers.

Good (G): Good does not mean Bad! The record can be put onto a turntable and be played through without skipping, but it will have significant surface noise and scratches and visible groove wear. A jacket or sleeve will have seam splits, especially at the bottom or the spine. Tape, writing, ring wear or other defects will start to overwhelm the object.
