Boom bap and hardcore hip-hop maestro Vinnie Paz has been rather quiet of late, with "As Above So Below" marking his return to solo action after a two-year absence. The Philadelphia veteran, renowned for the gravelly nature of his distinctive rap style, is in fine form throughout, delivering a string of quality cuts based around beats created by a cast-list of producers that includes Giallo Point, Stu Bengas, Vic Grimes, Bronze Nazareth, Scott Stallone and C-Lance. Musically, these beats are generally tough but musically rich, incorporating nods towards rock, soul, gospel, R&B, blues and ragga, while Paz's lyrics are as sharp and on-point as ever. Most of the leading underground hip-hop blogs and websites are raving about the album, and listening to the clips it's easy to see why.
