Many records, from this and other auctions, were acquired from private collections and we consider the most valuable records to be the ones which the owner can tell some story about. Recently, we’ve made acquaintance with the fan and collector of The Doors. One of his most vivid life moments is meeting Jim Morrison on Sunset Blvd, by the way, not far from the Sunset Sound recording studio. His collection contains many unique items related to The Doors which he isn’t ready to part ways with in spite of his age, including the Morrison’s autograph. The only items we could persuade him to sell were the 1st Mono pressing factory sealed copy of The Doors’ debut album and the original June 23, 1967 example of “Los Angeles Free Press” which contains the adverts for two of the first large “Doors” concerts. The uniqueness of this factory sealed copy is the fact that it contains an “Unimart” discount retailer’s price sticker in the upper right hand corner of the front cover and as James said: “I purchased it at the “Unimart” store in Culver City which at the time was located close to the crossing of Sawtelle & Sepulveda”.  The release of the album occurred on January 4, 1967 and if I am not mistaken, at the end of this month “Food Giant”, who owned “Unimart”, merged with “Vornado” who owned “Two Guys” and almost all of the “Unimart” stores became “Two Guys”. In February~March 1967, this copy would already have a “Two Guys” sticker. Therefore, it could be stated with confidence that this copy represents the absolute 1st pressing. There is one more circumstance that requires a comment. If you’re familiar with the transport logistics of retailers then you probably know that it significantly affects the price of products. Not a single retailer located in Los Angeles would order products from the East Coast having another manufacturer available several hundred feet away from him, I’m talking about the Monarch pressing plant which was 4 miles away from the “Unimart” located in Culver City. If our assumptions are correct then this copy with a high chance could be the uncensored Monarch pressing. It’s hard to add anything else to the description of this listing. This factory sealed copy has been stored with great care and is in beautiful Mint condition with the fully intact shrink wrap that contains the breathe holes, two in the lower part of the front and back cover. I think this is it when it comes to this factory sealed 1st Mono pressing copy. We would like to add more information about the issue of “Los Angeles Free Press” that is included in this listing. This 24-page newspaper contains the adverts for two of the first big Doors’ concerts. One of them containing a large portrait photo compilation of the band members, also used on the back cover of the debut album, promoted the concert at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium that took place on Monday, July 3, 1967. The second advert is for the Fantasy Fair and Magic Music Festival whose dates were still undetermined at the time when the issue came out and the event actually took place on July 10 and 11 as oppose to July 15 and 16 indicated in the newspaper. Just like the concert at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, the KFRC Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival was one of the first “Doors” large shows that happened during the rise of the band’s first major hit “Light My Fire” to the top of the charts.
