"SWEET CHILD IN TIME" (Ritchie Blackmore / Ian Gillan / Roger Glover / Jon Lord / Ian Paice, 1970)
(Extended live version with extra verses and lyrics.)

Sweet child in time,
You'll see the line,
The line that's drawn between
Good and bad.

See the blind man,
Shooting at the world,
Bullets flying,
Oh, taking toll.

If you've been bad,
Oh Lord, I bet you have,
And you've not been hit,
Oh, by flying lead.

You'd better close your eyes,
Ooh, bow your head...
Wait for the ricochet.....

Aah, I wanna hear you sing....

Sweet child in time,
You'll see the line,
The line that's drawn between
Good and bad.

See the blind man,
Shooting at the world,
Bullets flying,
Oh, taking toll.

If you've been bad,
Oh Lord, I bet you have,
And you've not been hit,
Mmm, by flying lead.

You'd better close your eyes,
Oohh, bow your head...
Wait for the ricochet........
DEEP PURPLE: "Made In Japan" UK DOUBLE ALBUM SET, RECORDED LIVE IN JAPAN, 16th & 17th AUGUST,1972.
THIS ORIGINAL PRESSING DATES FROM THE SPRING OF 1973, FIRST ISSUED IN THE UK, 30th DECEMBER, 1972.
THE MASSIVELY THICK, HEAVYWEIGHT VINYL IS PRECISELY THAT OF THE 1972 RECORDS, PLUS THIS PAIR OF
RECORDS HAS ALL THREE MASTERING LOGO'S IN THE RUN-OUT GROOVES:

RECORD 1, SIDE 1: 'KIP'
RECORD 1, SIDE 2:  'Delta Pork'
  RECORD 2, SIDE 2:  'Peckie'

I would normally prefer to itemise this pressing in the main part of the description, but having just written the above heading,
I cannot really proceed until I have firmly established exactly where and why this figures among the 'original' UK pressings.
Life for record sellers and collector's would be much less complicated if record companies were not continuously re-designing the
label texts!  "Made In Japan" was issued 30th December,1972, obviously only two days from being a 1973 release.   Seven days
later,6th January ,1973, it charted at No.14 and resided for 16 weeks in the UK charts, which is relevant to this "Made In Japan."
Pressed by EMI, the December,1972 - March,1973 initial pressings, had 'Gramophone Co. Ltd.' printed at approximately 10 o'clock
on the label rims, EMI unified all their subsidiary label rim text, including 'Purple Records,' during March,1973 by changing it
to 'EMI Records Ltd.' 16 weeks in the British charts took "Made In Japan" into late April, 1973, so this is technically part of the
original pressings and not a re-issue.  I realise many would argue with that but they would be wrong, I always identify every
record's pressing I offer, but when only days separated the records pressed towards the end of "Made In Japan's" chart duration,
such pettiness is beyond reason.  Copies with 'Gramophone' are from the same early 1973 period as this pair of records, they are
so closely inter-connected I am certain copies will exist with either some sides or one of the two records containing both label
rim texts.  You will see that daily on ebay on other records that were released and remained in the charts during alterations to
label text and complete overhauls of label colours and designs.  For EMI related records, the best known examples affected many
Beatles titles, exactly the same scenario and specific details applies to this 1969 - early 1973 period for every Deep Purple LP
released within that time frame.  For "Made In Japan" I am also examining the actual label texture and colour tones, the vinyl,
the laminated gatefold cover, most importantly of all, EMI's meticulous vinyl indexing, seen in the maitrix and stamping codes.
If that fails to convince even the most cynical out there, the definitive proof of being an original will follow after the above.
The inner sleeves really have a vital role to play as well, leaving none of the printed items or the vinyl machine indexing that
escape the closest possible scrutiny.  Quite easy for me because I was checking those very items as long ago as over 30 years,
when virtually anyone knew they existed, in other words, unable able to copy from an internet that also did not exist yet either.
This original pressing is identical....except for 'Gramophone Co. Ltd' being amended to 'EMI Records Ltd' on the left side of the
label rims.  I am hardly offering a V.G. pair of records here, but stunning unplayed records that are the same 44 years of age as
the records pressed after the New Year of 1973, which most were!  Nobody expected a live double album to not only breach the
Top 20 unless it was a budget issue, which "Made In Japan" most certainly was not.  In the early 70's live albums were forced by
the influx of bootlegs filling the void record companies and artists were hesitant about releasing, the Rolling Stones were the
first to react to the most famous live bootleg of them all with "Get Your Ya Ya'as Out",  The Who actually had "Live At Leeds"
designed to look and sound like a bootleg album!  However, they were single albums without the extra expense to fans of buying a
double album, in the 70's concerts were no longer 30 minutes long and required double albums at minimum.  To ensure reasonable
sales, most record companies issued live double albums at the same price as a single LP, after all, there was very little if any
studio time required and the concerts were paid for by the attending audiences.   So for "Made In Japan" to have reached No.14
and then reside in the charts for four months was unbelievable, then Deep Purple were one of the world's greatest live bands and
Mark 2 were performing staggering versions of "Child In Time" and "Smoke On The Water" in a fantastic live set!

This is not just about a live album, Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" was also affected by EMI's new label rim text, but that
was released in the same March,1973 change over, leaving only a relatively small amount pressed with 'Gramophone', plus the
initial solid blue prism/triangle re-design added to the complexity of the first/original pressings. There's no better example of
'first/original' being applicable than that but not the chart duration of "Dark Side", 310 months in the charts was off the scale
and in 2 years & 7 months too many changes happened to really consider 'original,' but I would still acknowledge some kind of a
connection to March,1973, even if was nearly 1976 before it left the UK charts!  Before I move onto the specific details of both
records and all the printed items, life is full of such coincidences, in America where Deep Purple first experienced success in
the late 1960's, "Made In Japan" was not released until...... April,1973.

THICKLY TEXTURED EMI /'PURPLE RECORDS' LABEL: TPSP 351
That textured paper showed up the slightest contact with the metal spindle, there are none on any of the four labels. One of the
two labels I selected for pictures was Side 3, has substantial vinyl shavings still in and around the spindle hole, I  you can physically
experience the astonishing sight of a brand new, unplayed 44 year old Deep Purple double album.  All four label centre's are same
  pure white, unaged and unused.

THE ACTUAL MAITRIX FOR BOTH RECORDS, BUT THERE IS ALSO  THREE MASTERING LOGO'sI IN THE RUN-OUT
GROOVES, THEY CAN BE VIEWED IN TWO  ACOMPILED PICTURES.
RECORD 1: TPSP 3511   A -  2U / TPSP 3511  B  - 1U
RECORD 2: TPSP 3512   A -  2   / TPSP 3512  B  - 1U

EMI STAMPING CODES;
  RECORD 1:  OM 4  / GRA 3
RECORD 2:  OM 3  / GT  1 (G)*
*The letter 'G' was stamped and as commonly found on 1960's & 1970's EMI records, the sound engineers setting the machine
often used the letter 'G' representing '1' at the 3 o'clock position.  No less than two individual George Peckham mastering logo's
on the first pressings, yes, it has to be from the first pressing to contain two George Peckham's logo's, along with 'KIP,' who I
cannot name.  If that tripple Mastering set is not enough to convince cynics, then they need to wake up to the reality of mass
vinyl manufacturing of a scale that.  No emails please, I do not have the time or the inclination to enter discussions, because
my experience alone should be enough, but I still give concrete evidence that was stamped into the molten vinyl!   Printed labels
were made Before the vinyl was pressed... but not necessarily used in chronological order because boxes were delivered and
stacked up, then taken at random, leaving the earlier deliveries at the bottom of the pile" You look at the stamping codes and
maitrix for the vinyl pressing....not the labels printed well before that happened.  A double album increases the chances of the
mothers being mixed together.  That in itself is still not conclusive enough to name an 'original'....unless the album's mastering
was 'signed' by the sound engineers in the run-out grooves.  For the first UK pressing / original "Made In Japan," that requires
three individual logo's for this particular double album, as mentioned, two sound engineer's were involved.

  RECORD 1, SIDE 1:  'KIP'
RECORD 1, SIDE 2:  'Delta Pork'
  RECORD 2, SIDE 4:  'Peckie'

The two mastering inscriptions I can name was legendary George Peckham with 'Peckie' and an improvised version of 'Porky',
only the band would have understand the 'Delta' joke, probably Ian Paice & Roger Glover who mixed the album. Those inscriptions
were first made on EMI Test Pressings and for unplayed records, the next items can be regarded as being paired with the records at
EMI's Hayes pressing plant from day one.

ORIGINAL MARCH - APRIL 1973, EMI / Purple LABEL INNER SLEEVE, UNUSED, UNSPLIT AND UNAGED.
Returning to the March, 1973 "Dark Side" example will be helpful here as well, very first pressings were issued in custom made
plain black inner's, all immediately following inner's were this type. Which means they were first printed during March and first
used in April,1973, verified by those records no longer having 'Gramophone Co.Ltd.' but 'EMI Records Ltd.', yes, variations simply
had to exist when record production was at such a phenomenal scale, I have to deal with the overwhelming majority to establish
this new design first appeared.  Curved corners inner sleeves with two sets of boxed information printed on the front in black,
  the top boxed instructions have the heading;

1.) "Care Of Your Records" - With five individual essential instructions that should be just as rigidly observed in 2016!

2.) "IMPORTANT NOTICE" - Copyright instructions and where to apply for performance licences and EMI's London address.

Underneath the bottom, "IMPORTANT NOTICE" is "Made In Great Britain" & The Patent Number.
THE FIRST OF THIS TYPE, MADE FROM THICK, TEXTURED PAPER BUT WITHOUT THE MONTH & YEAR WHEN IT
WAS PRINTED.   AFTER THE INITIAL 1973 INTRODUCTION, THE MANUFACTURING DATE WAS PRINTED ON THE
BOTTOM CENTRE OF THE FRONT.  INTERESTINGLY, IN 1975 WHEN BLUE PRINTING WAS BRIEFLY INTRODUCED
AND QUICKLY DISCARDED,THEY WERE ALSO WITHOUT A MANUFACTURING DATE.
BOTH INNER SLEEVES ARE IN UNUSED, NEAR MINT CONDITION.

VERY FIRST ISSUE 'Garrod & Lofthouse' GOLD COLOUR LAMINATED GATEFOLD COVER,THE MATT INSIDE IS
ORANGE WITH RED PRINTING.  WITH A LARGE SQUARE SHAPE SPINE, I CAN SAY THIS WAS  AN ORIGINAL LATE
1972 COVER, THESE SPECIFIC DETAILS THAT 100% MATCH EVERY POSSIBLE DETAIL ON FIRST EDITIONS OR ORIGINALS.

1.) A TRULY DELUXE QUALITY COVER, WITH ULTRA GLOSSY LAMINATION ON THE OUTSIDE, FINISHED OVER THE
BOTTOM EDGES WITH APPROXIMATELY AN INCH STUCK ON THE MATT INSIDE, BUT NOT ON THE INSIDE TOP EDGES.

2.)  THE COVER INCLUDES EMI 1960's TEXT, AS FOUND ON THE DEBUT 1968 LP, "Shades Of Deep Purple."

"File Under - POPULAR ; Pop Groups" - Printed on the bottom right of the inside left panel corner.

3.) NO DOUBT COMPLETELY MISSED, THROUGH BEING PRINTED ON THE CENTRAL INTERNAL SPINE BEFORE IT
WAS FOLDED, IS THE DATE WHEN THE FIRST COVERS WERE PRINTED, '7211' = November,1973.
Once the gatefold is opened, that all but disappears as the internal spine conceals most of the tiny printing, if you have an
original cover, check the very bottom of the internal spine and you will find that encoded and obscured '7211.'

3.)  AS MENTIONED, THE SPINE IS EXTRA WIDE AND IN A SQUARE OR BOOK SPINE SHAPE.

The above specifications apply to December,1972 very first pressings with 'Gramophone Co.Ltd." label rims, I could have just
said I know a 1972 first edition gatefold cover, through sheer experience as a professional record seller of long standing,
plus I bought an original. Facts avoid relying on personal opinions, but at least my opinions are based on first hand experience,
I know my way around items like 1970's EMI inner sleeves blindfolded.

The cover was never used and perfectly stored inside a plastic outer sleeve for every day of it's 45 years of age, maybe 44 years
of age if including sitting in EMI's warehouse since 1972.  There is no ageing to any part of the gatefold cover, a few traits of
standing in storage for all that time, just writing that is utter nonsense for four sides of an unplayed"Made In Japan. " I can't
help feeling frustrated by this part of cover descriptions, with average use in the early 1970's, double LP' had double handling.
A fantastic ultra glossy lamination, untouched and undulled and the unavoidable impressions of two records and the bottom edges
have moderate standing pressure.  As I often comment, I can and will locate ultimate, age defying condition records and covers
but I cannot do anything about gravity!  Two records even out the traits of the impression's made on gatefold covers and all else
is trivial, the slightest standing pressure on the front bottom right corner and the merest hint of rubbing to the bottom of the
spine tip.  Too minuscule to mention, so are a couple of tiny laminate edge lines, related to the records and if there is a more
stunning looking "Made In Japan" cover, I would love to see it!   Unaged and unused, the gold colour background, the colour
band pictures, the printing, including the spine and the deluxe quality laminate, are literally like brand new, allowing for the
described traits of holding the records for at least 43 years.  Standing in storage of course for all those decades, by placing a
'Near' in front of the grading, that will allow for natural occurances, but I refuse point blank to mention 'Excellent' here.
A REALLY BEAUTIFUL COVER IN NEAR MINT CONDITION.

JUST LIKE THE 1972 LABELS, THESE HAVE THE SAME TEXTURED FINISH AROUND THE WHITE CENTRE HOLES, THERE
IS NONE OF THE USUAL YELLOWING & STAINS ON ANY OF THE CENTRAL WHITE 'P' LETTER.  THE TOP OF THE 'P'
FORMS A WHITE CIRCLE AROUND THE CENTRE HOLE, I AM INCLUDING THE REST OF THE LETTER THAT CONTINUES
TO THE OUTSIDE RIM OF THE LABELS.    THERE ARE NO SPINDLE ALIGNMENT TRACES AND NO MARKS, SCUFFS OR
SCRATCHES ON THE GLEAMING LIKE NEW VINYL OF ALL FOUR SIDES.
ALL FOUR SIDES OF BOTH  RECORDS ARE IN UNPLAYED, TRUE MINT CONDITION.
With So Many Live Deep Purple Albums Available, I Will Include The Length Of The August 1972 Versions, When All
Four Sides Are Played, In Total There Are 76 : 44 Minutes Of ELECTRIFYING, RED HOT Rock Music.

With so much detail typed above I will not write much here, the pressing details were draining enough, but unless I give specific
facts I will only be answering emails.  Many years ago I thought the basic's were adequate and genuine experience was enough for
ebay descriptions, once I realised it would be contested, writing back to individuals with solid facts was not the answer.   Now I
bring all that experience and a lifetime's knowledge into the pressing and printing details, I would always prefer discussing the
music but accept the factual side of records.  Especially when they were often pressed in such incredible volumes, to me they are
all individuals and when in this incredible condition, I am even more prepared to dig as deeply as it takes to provide definitive
info. Playing and describing four sides of a double album always presents a problem to cover everything and for unplayed records
pressed by EMI, there is no need to check the sound quality anyway.  "Made In Japan" was recorded on a three day tour, the first
time Deep Purple toured Japan, which was surprising and the success of the reception that inspired such magnificent performances,
led to one of the greatest live double albums of all time.  All that was missing from their set was three encore songs which can
be accessed as the bonus tracks on CD versions.  August, 1972 was very much the era of "Machine Head", recently released in the
April, including the blockbuster, "Smoke On The Water," three further tracks were performed from the album. The three nights were
not meant to be released as an album, it was only recorded after Japanese request's for a live LP, the band initially said 'No,
they did not release live albums,' so sincere thank you to Japanese fans!  Without them we would not have this astonishing double
recorded by perhaps the finest Deep Purple line-up, Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Roger Glover, the late Jon Lord and Ian Paice.
It was very sad Jon's death robbed us of his talent, one of the world's greatest keyboard players named "Made In Japan" as his
personal favourite Deep Purple albums.  Originally the band insisted on keeping the  recording's copyright to make certain it was
only released in Japan, once they listened to the tapes they realised they had something very special to edit and mix. They were
so impressed with the potential for the album, they offered tapes to their American record company, Warner Bros. turned it down
because they felt a live album had no chance of being successful. The immediate run-away success outlined before in Britain, was
replicated in Europe and of course in Japan,  part of the reason for the delayed American release, Warner were much keener on the
studio album, "Who Do We Think We Are," being issued before "Made In Japan." Recording a live album intended for Japan only, was
not unique to Deep Purple, in the same era Jeff Beck's alliance with Tim Bogert and Carmine Appice in 1973 resulted in their live
concert in Japan being exclusively released on the Japanese Epic label, as "Beck, Bogert & Appice Live" in 1973, becoming the one
and only live BBA album in existence today. Even an ex- Beatle experienced a live LP being recorded in Japan, George Harrison had
Eric Clapton accompanying George and not even the presence of two legends was given worldwide release, unbelievable but true.
Recorded live in Japan, December,1991 in the same  Osaka and Tokyo, the tour was given a title that should have had the record
  companies queuing up to release the double LP pressed onto vinyl in Germany, due to George's Dark Horse/Warner Bros. connection;
"Rock Legends: George Harrison Live With Eric Clapton & His Band".  I have as usual 'wandered' away from Deep Purple live in 1972
but I cannot avoid the irony of how twenty years later in 1992, a live Harrison/Clapton album produced by Spike & Nelson Wilbury,
was only available to a comparative handful of people. At least "Made In Japan" was released in Britain and in time America where
it 'went gold,' those UK sales have been documented enough to not repeat them again.  Huge sales, but the album was so heavily
played in it's own time, this is the first I have been able to offer "Made In Japan" in eleven years of trading on ebay, unplayed
and true Mint is beyond anything I hoped for, I am thrilled to offer the ultimate condition.

  R & M RECORDS.

My lifetime's love of music and records began at a very young age, the arrival of the Beatles and the 1960's decade
in general had a very profound effect. It was only natural to bring all my first hand experience of collecting vinyl
into becoming a professional record seller.  Nearly thirty years ago we entered into the wonderful atmosphere
of record fairs with the highest possible standards set. When the Internet became the world's new market place for
vinyl, in 2001 it was time to join ebay. Those standards were rigidly adhered to as they will always continue to be,
the basics of honesty and integrity were very much part of the era the music I love originated in, so here is our friendly
and very efficient service we are proud to provide;

EVERY RECORD IS FULLY PLAYED AND COMES WITH A 'NO ARGUMENT' MONEY BACK GUARANTEE.
I USE GOOD OLD COMMON SENSE AS WELL AS A GLOBALLY ACCEPTED GRADING TERMINOLOGY
FROM THE U.K. "RECORD COLLECTOR PRICE GUIDE" BOOK.
THERE IT CLEARLY STATES "Sound Quality" AFFECTS EVERY GRADING LEVEL AND THAT IS THE ONE
AND ONLY POSSIBLE WAY TO ACCURATELY GRADE RECORDS. i.e. COMBINING A STRICT VISUAL
INSPECTION WITH VERY CLOSELY LISTENING TO EVERY SECOND, UNLESS PERHAPS IN THE CASE
OF GENUINELY UNPLAYED VINYL.  EVEN THEN WE STILL TAKE FULL RESPONSIBILITY FOR A RECORD
WHEN A CUSTOMER RECEIVES EITHER A SEALED OR AN UNPLAYED RECORD.

We take 100% responsibility after an item has been posted and offer our fullest support in the event of any problems.
"There Are No Problems, Only Solutions" (John Lennon)
MY DESCRIPTIONS WILL ALWAYS BE 100% HONEST AND TOTALLY ACCURATE ON ALL GRADINGS

WEIGH A LITTLE EXTRA.

UNDER PAYPAL & EBAY'S GUIDELINES, ALL RECORDS WILL BE SENT VIA A FULLY INSURED TRACKABLE
SERVICE.

We have kept all our charges at the same level for years now, but due to the Post Office's new price increases, regretfully we
will have to increase the cost of LP's, however, singles will remain unchanged.  Ebay were aware of that happening and have
increased their minimum postal cost for LP's to £7.00, that figure has been enforced by the UK Post Office and it will become
our UK First Class, Recorded Delivery cost for albums up to the value of £46.  A temporary reduction this week means we can
now post LP's for £5, but who knows how long before the Post Office return to £7?

For LP's valued above £46, the cost will be £9, we are unhappy about either increase but our high standard of packaging has meant
in 13 years of ebay trading, there has not been one record damaged, we are determined to maintain that in the present and future.

IN THE UK RECORDS UP TO THE VALUE OF £46 WILL BE SENT RECORDED DELIVERY, OVER £46 WILL BE
SENT SPECIAL DELIVERY.
FOR THE REST OF THE WORLD ALL RECORDS WILL BE SENT VIA 'INTERNATIONAL SIGNED FOR.'
