THE WHO: "La - La -La - Lies" / "The Good's Gone" 45 VERY RARE FIRST UK PRESSING IN MONO.
RELEASED 11th NOVEMBER, 1966, BUT IT COMPLETELY FAILED TO SELL AND NEVER MADE A CHART ENTRY.
I only sell the Who singles as close to Mint as possible, the 1960's Who 45's that did chart and sell in vast numbers, are hardly
  available in any better than 'Very Good' condition.  Not charting increases the extreme rarity of the "La - La - La - Lies" single
in any condition, an incredible collection of UK Who singles, included that almost unobtainable Brunswick 1966 first pressing
in once played only, totally unmarked, Mint condition.

Pressed by Decca, the very first pressing, but only the one small pressing was ever made.


ORIGINAL 1966 RED & WHITE BRUNSWICK SLEEVE, IN SUPERB NEAR MINT CONDITION.
Hardly aged with only a record impression and a few related light creases, the very sleeve this record was first placed inside
51 years ago now. Top left in pencil, the 'O5968' catalogue was handwritten by the original 1966 record shop, faded but readable.


THE LABELS ARE IMMACULATE  AND THE VINYL LITTERALY LOOKS LIKE BRAND NEW, NO MARKS, SCUFFS AND
POSITIVELY NO SCRATCHES.
RECORD IS IN  ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, ONCE PLAYED, MINT CONDITION.

There is a quartet of very rare Brunswick label singles issued just after the Who left Brunswick, "La - La -La - Lies" is by far the
rarest of them all. They left Brunswick March,1966 and signed to Robert Stigwood's newly formed Reaction label, Brunswick reacted
  by releasing three of the greatest tracks as singles, from the Who's remarkable 1965 "My Generation" debut album. They are rare
  singles because of the low sales, none are more sought after from that trio then the "La - La -La - Lies" single, it was paired
  with the fantastic"The Good's Gone", both were Pete Townshend composition's, unique examples of the earliest recording of
  the Who's massive talent.   The first  Brunswick singles released from "My Generation" was " A Legal Matter" / "Instant Party"
  in March, 1966, followed by "The Kids Are Alright" / "The Ox" on the  3rd September, 1966, and later in the year the final one,
  "La - La - Lies" / "The Good's Gone" on the 11th November, 1966.  Writing about 1965 recording's released in 1966 cannot make
any sense without the connection between the Brunswick singles and the Who in the same time frame.  I just played both sides of
this amazing condition "La - La - Lies" single and as expected, fantastic Mono sound quality from the extremely rare and unique
Shel Talmy 45 mixes.  A  Mint 1966 Who record is a joy to play and enjoy, Shel Talmy went straight for the senses and mixed the
tracks with extreme volume, power and sheer impact, just like all of the Who records in the 1960's.  Why not, when you had the
extraordinary powerhouse drumming from Keith Moon, John's bass played more like a weapon, Pete's aggressive guitar and
Roger's sensational vocals?  For the rarity, I think re-playing the record would be sheer indulgence for a very old Who fan, I will
instead use my knowledge of that very era of leaving Brunswick and starting again with the Reaction label.  A complex era that
placed the band in a courtroom being sued!  


In March,1966, the Who went straight to work, recording and releasing their first single for the Polydor owned new "Reaction"
  label,"Substitute."  For the B-side, the Who re-recorded a new version of Pete's "Instant Party", re-titled "Circles"......I did say
this was complicated, some of the first "Substitute" Reaction pressings had the original "Instant Party" title and now the whole
affair was about to become an actual 'legal matter.'  Former Who producer, Shel Talmy, who had only recently produced the first
recording of "Instant Party" during recording sessions for the "My Generation" album, issued a court injunction agasinst Polydor,
forcing the withdrawal of the Reaction "Substitute" single, on the very same week in March, 1966 it was issued in Britain!  Crazily
in spite of Pete Townshend writing the song and the Who performing it, Shel Talmy and Brunswick owned the copyright, or as the
original 1966 Brunswick label has it printed, "Produced by Orbit-Universal Ltd. Co."  Brunswick's parent company, Decca, in fact
owned the license and they were now after their pound of flesh!  That was the way it was in the 1960's, so "Substitute" had to be
  withdrawn immediately, because the judgement came on the day of the release, naturally fans who were ready and waiting, were
  lucky to buy a copy or today they would not exist, be it in very small numbers though.  It was now very urgent for Reaction/Polydor
  to make a second pressing in their haste to get the legally owned "Substitute" released, a track not even recorded by the Who was
  used as the B-side, "Waltz For A Pig", quickly commissioned and recorded by The Graham Bond Organisation. The reason the Who
  wre prevented from recording another track for the B-side, was tied into the Shel Talmy injunction, that included precluding the
  Who from recording until the first week in April.  So there was a certain amount of irony in that "Waltz For A Pig" song title!
    People often ask how I have so much knowledge about records like this, it was an all consuming obsession that at the time felt
  perfectly normal, following events like this was not exactly a passing interest, I saw The Who playing live before they were even
  known outside local Mods around London.  From "I Can't Explain" every new single and LP was eagerly and impatiently waited for,
reading the weekly music press papers for a snippet of news and date of the releases.  I have all this information in my original
March,1966 "New Musical Express", the centre pages contained the very latest news for all artists, presented in short paragraphs
with tour announcements as well, the mini headline is,"The Who's New Single Withdrawn."  Amazingly the very same edition has a
  Reaction promotional advert for "Substitute," full size covering the complete back page!  Out of interest, Decca or Brunswick had
  placed a rival promo advert for "Legal Matter" in that week's "NME", but in a cheaper small box.  "Substitute" was allowed to be
  released once again on the 18th March and Reaction were allowed to sell the few remaining first pressings with "Instant Party" or
  "Circles" alongside the turquoise second pressings.  Only just missing hitting the Top and made No.2 in the UK charts, meanwhile
without any competition since the 7th March, the "Legal Matter" Brunswick single had a free run and after just over two weeks of
slow sales, "A Legal Matter" struggled no higher than No.32, the 25th March. I will conclude the fate of "Instant Party"/"Circles",
in 1966 the little known but extremely talented Les Fleur de Leys recorded a superb version of "Circles" for the Immediate label,
  produced by a certain Jimmy Page, it failed to sell and the original single commands incredible prices today.  In the same 1966
The Who were far from leaving their second recording unheard, Pete Townshend overcame one of his greatest songs to date being
  deemed not to belong to him by a court injunction, in the time honoured way, re-recording it for Reaction with the new title now
firmly now as "Circles."  The Reaction label's 1966 EP ,"Ready Steady Who," includes that second version of "Circles," so two
versions exist but they are completely different recordings with different producers, I love them both!  The lyrics are slightly
different as well, we are so fortunate to have two versions of such a magnificent Who song that also happened to be historically
major. "Instant Party" marks the very point The Who evolved from their original Mod r&b, into the exciting psychedelia that was
about to become a renaissance,"Instant Party" was the very first track with Reaction, moving into a new, sensational direction.
  After the November, 1966, "La - La - Lies"single, the Who a short step from releasing "A Quick One, While He's Away" album in
  December, 1966.  You could conclude 1966 was quite an eventful year for the Who and their fans!
 
When the dust had landed and the battle won, Brunswick released "The Kids Are Alright" / "The Ox" single in and this final 45,
"La - La - Lies" / "The Good's Gone."   I have all three to list on ebay and I am thrilled to offer "La - La - Lies" for the very
first time on ebay, it took me 16 years to locate the "La - La - Lies" single, but previously for the other pair, "Legal Matter"
and  "The Kids Are Alright," I have only sold one of each title.  In a way, it was a a good idea to piece together the events of
1966 for the Who, because it will serve to present the other two rare Brunswick singles.
