"THE LAST TIME" ( Mick Jagger / Keith Richard, 1965)
I told you once and I told you twice,
But you never listen to my advice,
You don't try very hard to please me,
With what you know that should come easy.
This could be the last time,
This could be the last time,
Maybe the last time,
I don't know....
I'm sorry girl, but I can't stay,
Feeling like I do today,
Too much pain, Too much sorrow,
I guess I'll feel the same tomorrow.
This could be the last time,
This could be the last time,
Maybe the last time,
I don't know....
I told you once and I told you twice,
Someone has to pay the price,
Now's your chance to change your mind,
Cause I've been gone a long long time.
This could be the last time,
This could be the last time,
Maybe the last time,
I don't know....
THE WHO: "The Last Time" / "Under My Thumb" 45. UK FIRST AND ONLY PRESSING, ISSUED 22nd JULY, 1967,
AS A DOUBLE A-SIDE SINGLE, RECORDED AND MIXED IN MONO ONLY.
TEXTURED, MATT TRACK LABEL: 604006.
When I say 'textured', even for the 1960's, this is as textured as any paper label possibly gets, adding to the character. Not that
character is needed for this 1967 single. The Who recorded two Rolling Stones track to support them when the police tried to
break 'butterflies on a wheel' by planting drugs on Mick Jagger & Keith Richard. Next, it was Brian Jones busted for possession
of a few joints and the same vindictive police officer out to 'get' musicians, also arrested John Lennon for the same 'crime,' it
was planted once again.
Both tracks have this printed on the labels underneath the song titles;
In support of Mick Jagger & Keith Richard
MAITRIX: 604006 A ▽ 1 / 604006 B ▽ 1
A very first Polydor pressing, unbelievably this single sold so few copies, it struggled to No.44 in the UK charts, so briefly,
it became the worst selling 1960's and 1970's single on the Track Label. Only the one pressing was required and made.
A fantastic near complete collection of the Who's singles that had hardly been played, included the rarest Brunswick era and
the Track Records 45's, this once played "The Last Time" / "Under My Thumb" was my first choice to list on ebay.
AS MENTIONED FOR THE FIRST EVER 'Track Records' SINGLE, JIMI HENDRIX'S classic, "Purple Haze," NEVER
HAD CUSTOM PRINTED 7" SLEEVES. A RARELY SEEN PURPLE COLOUR SLEEVE SURFACED IN THE EARLY 1970's
BUT EVEN THAT DID NOT HAVE ANYTHING PRINTED ON IT, SO JUST A COUPLE OF SELECTED PICTURE SLEEVES.
ORIGINAL 1967 TRACK INNER SLEEVE, WHICH IN REALITY AN UNPRINTED POLYDOR SLEEVE, PLAIN WHITE WITH AN
ARCHED TOP OPENING. MADE FROM ABSORBENT MATT PAPER AND WHITE, AGEING SHOULD REALLY BE INEVITABLE
AFTER 49 YEARS, THE LACK OF CONSTANT HANDLING AND CAREFUL STORAGE PREVENTED NO MORE THAN A HINT
OF THE USUAL RECORD IMPRESSION AND A FEW RELATED GENTLE CREASES, BUT NO TEARS OR SPLITS,
IN EXCELLENT+++ / NEAR MINT CONDITION.
THE RECORD WAS ONLY PLAYED ONCE, WELL, "The Last Time" WAS NOT PLAYED AND "Under My Thumb" WAS
ONLY PLAYED ONCE. A STUNNING LOOKING ULTRA GLOSSY RECORD, WITH THE APPEARANCE OF JUST PRESSED
VINYL. HANDLING WAS MADE WITH GREAT CARE AND THERE IS ONLY ONE FEATHER LIGHT WISP, THAT COMES
UNDER THE HEADING OF, 'NEAR INVISIBLE HANDLING TRACES.' CERTAINLY NO MORE THAN HOW THE RECORD
LEFT POLYDOR'S PRESSING PLANT IN JULY ,1967. I NEVER EXAGGERATE THE CONDITION OF RECORDS AND THE
RARITY STAKES MAKES NO DIFFERENCE, THE RECORD IS IN MINT- CONDITION.
Where do I begin? This record is directly related to the Rolling Stones and the outrage felt by fellow artists when they were
treated like criminals, arrested, tried and sentenced to prison. Even 'The Times' newspaper reacted and compared the prison
sentences given to Mick & Keith, to 'breaking butterflies on a wheel.' I will retrace the events that led to this Who single and
the Rolling Stones recording the "We Love You" single, the 1967 Stones record that was written about the court case and the
imprisonment of Mick, Keith and Brian, leaving only Bill and Charlie! The Who were not alone in supporting the Rolling Stones
and on "We Love You", the voices of John Lennon and Paul McCartney were heard on the chorus. That will be the best place to
begin,25th June 1967 Mick Jagger and Keith Richard sang on the live recording of the Beatles "All You Need Is Love" in Abbey
Road Studio, Brian Jones contributed an oboe to "Baby Your A Rich Man", the B-side of the Beatles single, in the same month he
played a sax on another Beatles track, "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)," which remained unreleased until 1970 when it
was issued as the the B-side to the "Let It Be" single. So John Lennon and Paul McCartney returned the compliment in early July,
1967, I know websites quote 12th June as the date "We Love You" was recorded but that not possible. Mick and Keith were still
waiting for their trials and the verdicts, until 27th - 30th June, that last day of June was when they were give bail. The song
was written just after the drug busts in May,1967, Marianne Faithfull was partying with Mick Jagger at Keith's home,'Redlands' in
Sussex, when the police arrived for a drugs raid. They burst in and Marianne was found wrapped in a fur rug, she dropped it and
was naked. The police looked on in amazement, Keith promptly walked over to his record turntable and picked out a record to play,
the sound of Bob Dylan singing "Everybody must get stoned" added to this bizarre scene. Drugs were 'discovered' (planted!) and
Mick Jagger & Keith Richard were arrested, not Marianne, but our national press eagerly latched onto the story and the famous,
'Mars bar used in a sex act,' became as widely reported as Mick and Keith's drugs bust. Brian Jones had been arrested earlier but
there were actual drugs in his home, as you can imagine, the media were gloating but the Stones were well used to such adverse
publicity by 1967.
"We Love You" single was recorded and released firstly, to thank everyone who supported them through the arrests, trials and
even imprisonment, that included their fans, the Who for recording two Stones tracks to release on this single as their gesture
of support, and John and Paul for singing on "We Love You." When Mick and Keith were given outrageous sentences, Keith, a year
in prison for, "allowing his house to be used for smoking cannabis" and Mick, three months for smoking it. On the following day,
1st July 1967, the just mentioned 'Times' also raised their voice against such a harsh and unrealistic sentence, Britain's most
respected pillar of the establishment, published their editorial, heavily attacking the heavy sentences and likened them to that
poetic metaphor, 'breaking a butterfly on a wheel.' In the end heavy fines were deemed punishment enough, but Mick still spent
three days in Brixton prison, they elected to go on trial after pleading 'not guilty,' they had been planted by the same crooked
police officer who also planted grass in Lennon's home in 1968. A certain Inspector Slipper was to be later jailed himself for
corruption. Next it was Brian Jones turn to be caught in possession of those naughty unlawful substances! He wasn't planted,
just targeted like Mick and Keith. The Who's single came first, right in the middle of the court cases, in July 1967, aggression
and anger were all part of The Who's music, now two of Mick and Keith's songs had the power of the Who venting their feelings!
Their solidarity with the Stones was not just recording their songs, the commitment was found printed on the labels underneath
the titles," In Support Of Mick Jagger & Keith Richard". The idea was radio DJ's would read that out when they introduced either
side of the double A-side, although the Track catalogue numbers place "The Last Time" as the A-side and "Under My Thumb" as the
with the B-side. Considering the spontaneity that produced outstanding performances on both tracks, plus the high status profile
of The Who in mid-1967, why this great single failed to sell cannot be explained. It only spent 28 days in the UK charts, never
rising above No.44, becoming the poorest selling Who single in the entire 60's decade. I cannot count the Brunswick cash-in
singles, released a year after they left and signed to the Reaction label, even if I did, the last pair also climbed no higher than
the same 40 position's. With The Stones making headlines on a daily basis in this troubled period, the connection still left this
a neglected Who single and obviously the rarest latest Who single ever released outside of demo's, test pressings or acetates.
I should issue a volume warning here, to vent the anger the Who had the tracks mastered to the very edge of distortion, the sheer
power of the single has to be heard to be believed. VG copies have got no chance of not distorting, John's bass alone is off the
scale, Pete's solo on the "The Last Time" is incredibly loud...as well as absolutely stunning! This immaculate record is on the
right side of audio clarity,as I said, one loud record! I will keep my text minimal due to the rarity of this perfect condition.
The run-in grooves are near silent, an amazingly powerful intro to "The Last Time" explodes with sensational mono sound.
The effect is just superb,The Who didn't just play the intro they injected real venom into it! Keith Moon's drumming starts off
similarly to how Charlie Watts used his snares, but Moony is soon attacking the drums with a ferocity unique to The Who in this
mean and aggressive mood. John Entwistle's bass guitar is at that colossal loud level we've come to expect from this their
psychedelic era, Roger Daltrey sings the lyrics with unrestrained, full on power, his voice was double tracked to double up the
force. Pete Townshend's guitar is exceptionally loud behind the verses, then for the penultimate Townshend solo he lets rip with
staggering aggression, producing screaming feedback and fantastic psychedelic sounds. They tear into the last section with all
the fury that instigated the recording, Pete's now plays with even more amazing aggression, you can almost picture him smashing
his guitar into the amps as he finishes! Keith Moon's drumming explodes at the end as well, absolutely astonishing performances
even by The Who's standards! The sound is magnificent, in all the frenzied sounds being generated, all I've described remains as
crystal clear, with none of the awful distortion groove wear causes. The Who's singles always had maximum volume mastered, but
"The Last Time" / "Under My Thumb" was mastered so loudly, it reminds me attending their gigs in the 60's and 70's, it took a week
before my ears stopped ringing!
"Under My Thumb" also has a supremely clean intro from virtually silent run-in grooves, this is the other side of The Who and for
this great 1966 "Aftermath" track, they perform it with the fullest emphasis placed on the melody. Needless to say the backing is
also extremely powerful, but the vocals are sung with stunning harmonies. Like on their third album recorded later in this year,
"The Who Sell Out", the two tracks contain both elements of the Who's music, this is the melodic side, Pete and Roger bring out
the melody above all else with their superb, jointly sung lead vocals. I know I write my descriptions as a lifetime Who fan, but
this is a very special recording, they use all their "La-la la" backing vocal harmonies, as found on 1965 tracks such as "Lies".
The aggression surfaces on the bridge when Pete plays his guitar with sheer aggression, but more of a controlled aggression.
The bass guitar is also highly melodic and the drums provide a very solid and steady rhythm. The sound is that of a Mint record
this side also plays without any surface sound and positively none of the distortion found on 95% of all existing first pressing.
What a fantastic record!

R & M RECORDS.
My lifetime's love of music and records began at a very young age, the arrival of the Beatles and the 1960's decade
in general had a very profound effect. It was only natural to bring all my first hand experience of collecting vinyl
into becoming a professional record seller. Nearly thirty years ago we entered into the wonderful atmosphere
of record fairs with the highest possible standards set. When the Internet became the world's new market place for
vinyl, in 2001 it was time to join ebay. Those standards were rigidly adhered to as they will always continue to be,
the basics of honesty and integrity were very much part of the era the music I love originated in, so here is our friendly
and very efficient service we are proud to provide;

We have kept all our charges at the same level for years now, but due to the Post Office's new price increases, regretfully we
will have to increase the cost of LP's, however, singles will remain unchanged. Ebay were aware of that happening and have
increased their minimum postal cost for LP's to £7.00, that figure has been enforced by the UK Post Office and it will become
our UK First Class, Recorded Delivery cost for albums up to the value of £46. A temporary reduction this week means we can
now post LP's for £5, but who knows how long before the Post Office return to £7?
For LP's valued above £46, the cost will be £9, we are unhappy about either increase but our high standard of packaging has meant
in 13 years of ebay trading, there has not been one record damaged, we are determined to maintain that in the present and future.
IN THE UK RECORDS UP TO THE VALUE OF £46 WILL BE SENT RECORDED DELIVERY, OVER £46 WILL BE
SENT SPECIAL DELIVERY.
