"INSTANT PARTY" (Pete Townshend, 1965)

Circles, my head is going round in circles,
My mind is caught up in a whirlpool,
  Dragging me down.....

Time, will tell if I'll take the homeward track,
Dizziness will make my feet walk back,
   Walk right back to you....

Everything I do, I think of you,
No matter how I try, I can't get by,
These circles, leading me back to you........

Round and around and around and around and around
And around and around and around and around......

.....And round and round like a fool I go,
Down and down in the pool I go,
   Dragging me down......

Everything I do, I think of you,
No matter how I try, I can't get by,
Circles, leading me back to you........

There's one thing could kill the pain, of losing you,
But it gets me so dizzy, then I'm walking right back again,
  Back to you......

Time, will tell if these dreams are nearly fact,
Don't know why I left, I'm coming back.....
  Coming on back to you.............
THE WHO:" A Legal Matter" / "Instant Party" 45 RARE FIRST UK PRESSING, 7th MARCH, 1966 IN MONO.

TEXTURED BLACK & SILVER BRUNSWICK LABEL: O5956.

  MAITRIX:  45 - 116787 - 2T   / 45 - 116915 - 1T
Still the '45' prefix and Decca had recentlyintroduced the 'T' lietter to Brunswick singles, only the one pressing was ever made
until recently.  Be very wary about the ebay sellers who do not declare they are selling the recent 'The Who Singles Box Set.'
The Brunswick trio mentioned are listed without stating they are re-issues from the 2,000's and of course the "I Can't Explain"
debut in Mint, is sought after.  Look at thealmost identical photo copied Brunswick labels at 3 o'clock, there you will see the
'Polydor' logo, Decca pressed the Brunswick 60's singles, NOT Polydor until the 1966 Reaction label and the 1967 Track label.

Ebay should not be like a baited trap for the inexperienced, but there are more fake or re-issue records listed on ebay, than the
original, authentic records!
The stamping codes at 3 & 9 o'clock in the run out grooves confirm the very first first pressing made.

DECCA'S DIGITS AT 9 O'CLOCK NUMBERS ARE '1' ON BOTH SIDES, SIGNIFYING THE FIRST 'MOTHERS.'
CODED LETTERS AT 3 O'CLOCK  ARE 'BU' / 'BB'

BU = No.12
BB = No.11

Amazingly low in the sequence with the first 'mothers' per individual side, when you can state, 'very frst pressing.'

BR> ORIGINAL 1965 BRUNSWICK RED & WHITE SLEEVE, HARDLY USED WITHOUT ANY SPLITS OR TEARS.
The sleeve is in superb condition, ageing is at an absolute minimum, with a naturally made record impression and a few gentle
creases, all the edges and t seams are as strong as they were in 1965.  The die-cut centre edges have a few light ruffles and
for the age, a superb original 1965 Brunswick sleeve.
HOW COULD AN AUTHENTIC 51 YEAR OLD SLEEVE NOT HAVE THE ABOVE WITHOUT BEING COUNTERFEIT?
YES, EVEN FAKE BRUNSWICK SLEEVES CAN EASILY BE BOUGHT ON EBAY BY SELLERS.
THE SLEEVE IS IN A MINIMUM OF  EXCELLENT+++ / NEAR MINT CONDITION.

THE RECORD HAS BEEN DESCRIBED AND MY PICTURES SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES ABOUT THE LABELS AND THE
AMAZING CONDITION LABELS.   IT IS ABSURD TO DISCUSS FACTORY HANDLING FOR A ONCE ONLY PLAYED 1966
RECORD.  I AM CERTAIN THE ONE PLAY WAS BY THE 1966 RECORD SHOP, WHICH IS ANOTHER POINT OF HANDLING.
THAT IS THE REALITY OF VINYL, ANY FEATHER LIGHT, NEAR INVISIBLE HANDLING TRACES....ARE NEAR INVISIBLE.
THE RECORD IS IN ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, ONCE PLAYED MINT CONDITION

The third of the 1966 Brunswick trio of extremely rare Who singles, issued the same year they left to sign with Robert Stigwood's
'Reaction' just founded label.  In the 60's Who did not release records on any independent record company, on the Reaction label
they had Cream keeping them company, a year later in 1967 they signed with the Track Records label, where they shared the new
label with the Jimi Hendrix Experience.   In theory I should have nothing to write about because I have just listed and sold the
other two,"La - La -La - Lies" / "The Good's Gone" last week and "The Kids Are Alright" / "The Ox" tonight (Tuesday, 28. 2. 2017)
Straight away I have started with a different view of the Who having three record companies in only three years, well, really
four in four years, if you include their 1964 debut 45, "I'm The Face"/ "Zoot Suite" as the High Numbers on the Fontana label.
All from a stunning condition collection of Who singles, of course there is a common background. In 1966 Brunswick reacted
by releasing three of the greatest tracks from the Who's 1965 incredible "My Generation" debut album as singles. They are rare
singles because of low sales, the first  Brunswick single from "My Generation" only involved the A-side, "A Legal Matter" because
the B-side had never been previously available, "Instant Party" was not on the "My Generation" album.   If Decca and Shel Talmy
had given this first single more consideration, they would have realised they had a fantastic track in "Instant Party," it was the
first Who recording with a psychedelic feel in the glorious melody, the vocals, instrumentation and production.  So much so, the
revered Fleur De Lysrecorded the track with the alternate title,"Circles," March, 1966 for the Immediate label.  The Who's first
version was titled "Instant Party" but the main lyric or chorus was 'circles,' if issued as the A-side I am certain it would have
been at least a Top 5 hit single, but I thoroughly understand "A Legal Matter" being chosen because it was one of the album's
most outstanding tracks.  Time never stood still in the 60's, 1965 was nothing like 1966, "Instant Party" / "Circles" was ahead
of it's time and the Who's version woud have been perfectly suited to 1967 -1968, it really had the sound and feel of  the 1967
"The Who Sell Out" LP.   "A Legal Matter" / "Instant Party" was issued 7th March, 1966 and only reached No.32 in the UK charts,
the second "My Generation" sourced single was The Kids Are Alright" / "The Ox" on the 3rd September, 1966, and later in the
year the final one of the trio, "La - La - Lies" / "The Good's Gone" on the 11th November, 1966.   I just played both sides of
this amazing once only payed, Mint condition  "A Legal Matter" / "Instant Party" single and as expected, fantastic Mono sound
quality from the rare and unique 1966 Shel Talmy 45 mixes.

Right, I know I have covered this subject  twice in two weeks, but this is important and relevant.... plus extremely complicated.
In the same March,1966, the Who went straight to work recording and releasing their first single for the Polydor owned Reaction
label,"Substitute."  For the B-side The Who re-recorded a new version of Pete's "Instant Party", re-titled "Circles"....I did say
this was complicated, some of the first "Substitute" Reaction pressings had the original "Instant Party" title and now the whole
affair was about to become an actual 'legal matter.'  Former Who producer, Shel Talmy, who had only recently produced the first
recording of "Instant Party" during recording sessions for the "My Generation" album, issued a court injunction against Polydor,
forcing the withdrawal of the Reaction "Substitute" single, on the very same week in March,1966 it was issued in Britain!  Crazily
inspite of PeteTownshend writing the song and the Who performing it, Shel Talmy and Brunswick owned the copyright, or as this
original 1966 Brunswick label has it printed, "Produced by Orbit-Universal Ltd. Co."  Brunswick's parent compan,y Decca in fact
owned the license and they were now after their pound of flesh!  That was the way it was in the 1960's, so "Substitute" had to be
withdrawn immediately, because the judgement came on the day of the release, naturally fans who were ready and waiting, were
lucky to buy a copy or today they would not exist, be it in very small numbers though.  It was now very urgent for Reaction/Polydor
to make a second pressing in their haste to get the legally owned "Substitute" released, a track not even recorded by the Who was
used as the B-side, "Waltz For A Pig", quickly commissioned and recorded by The Graham Bond Organisation.  The reason the Who
wre prevented from recording another track for the B-side was tied into the Shel Talmy injunction, that included precluding the
Who from recording until the first week in April.  So there was a certain amount of irony in that "Waltz For A Pig" song title!
People often ask how I have so much knowledge about records like this, it was an all consuming obsession that at the time felt
perfectly normal, following events like this was not exactly a passing interest, I saw The Who playing live before they were even
known outside local Mods around London.  From "I Can't Explain" every new single and LP was eagerly and impatiently waited for,
reading the weekly music press papers for a snippet of news and date of the releases.  I have all this information in my original
March,1966 "New Musical Express", the centre pages contained the very latest news for all artists, presented in short paragraphs
with tour announcements as well, the mini headline is,"The Who's New Single Withdrawn."  Amazingly the very same edition has a
Reaction promotional advert for "Substitute," full size covering the complete back page!  Out of interest, Decca or Brunswick had
placed a rival promo advert for "Legal Matter" in that week's "NME", but in a cheaper small box.  "Substitute" was allowed to be
released once again on the 18th March,  Reaction had permission to sell the few remaining first pressings with "Instant Party" or
"Circles" alongside the turquoise second pressings.  Only just missing hitting the Top, reaching No.2 in the UK charts, meanwhile
without any competition since the 7th March, this "Legal Matter" Brunswick single had a free run and after just over two weeks of
slow sales, "A Legal Matter" struggled no higher than No.32, 25th March. I will conclude the fate of "Instant Party"/"Circles",
in 1966 the little known but extremely talented Les Fleur de Leys recorded a superb version of "Circles" for the Immediate label,
produced by a certain Jimmy Page, it failed to sell and the original single commands incredible prices today.  In the same 1966
The Who were far from leaving their second recording unheard, Pete Townshend overcame one of his greatest songs to date being
deemed not to belong to him by a court injunction, in the time honoured way, re-recording it for Reaction with the new title now
firmly now as "Circles."  The Reaction label's 1966 EP ,"Ready Steady Who," includes that second version of "Circles," so two
versions exist but they are completely different recordings with different producers, I love them both!  The lyrics are slightly
different as well, we are so fortunate to have two versions of such a magnificent Who song that also happened to be historically
major. "Instant Party" marks the very point The Who evolved from their original Mod r&b, into the exciting psychedelia that was
about to become a renaissance,"Instant Party" was the very first track with them moving into new, sensational direction.

Rare records from the 60's are usually offered in well played condition because so few exist, but even the chart topping records
are rarely available in anything better than the true interpretation of a V.G. grading, the supposedly plentiful turquoise label
"Substitute" singles that made No. 2 in the same time frame testify to that.  This is a staggering condition of "A Legal Matter,"
both side's labels are in immaculate condition, with only one solitary trace of a spindle alignment per side, which for a 51 year
old single is extremely rare.  Often I find it farcical for records from such a different era and record playing equipment, to be
being graded the same as a record pressed this week, occasionally rare records like this can be compared to the most recent
re-issues, the big difference is the original mono mastering and sound will blow away anything recently made. I can't wait to
hear it again, just one play for a short description, I take great care to not allow contact between my spindle and the label
centres, my plays are undetectable and nI can't wait to hear this beautiful Mint- Who record.

"Legal Matter" has near silent run-in grooves with just the very faintest natural static, such perfect condition vinyl dispenses
with loud and explosive crackles.  A superbly clean intro, as Pete Townshend's guitar intro erupts in just staggering  power!
The vocals come in with a vengeance, the audio clarity is unbelievable, album tracks mastered onto a 60's mono single take on
a life of their own in the 45 mix.  Especially when made by Shel Talmy, check out the early Kinks singles  to hear how talented a
producer he was at squeezing a massive impact onto a single., in comparison LP mixes sound tame.   Pete Townshend sings the
whole lead vocals on his outstanding 1965 composition, great lyrics about an impending marriage and the looming domesticity.
His guitar shows great restraint throughout, only really dominating on the intro and those superb notes were used for the outro.
Nick Hopkins magnificent piano is heard in fantastic power and  clarity, I am listening very hard for surface sound but even on
Keith Moon's drums break there is none.  There are no crackles during the whole track, Decca produced some of the finest 60's
singles for sound and impact. John's e bass just booms out as undistorted sound in perfect definition, to hear this sounding like
it was freshly bought in 1965 is a pleasure beyond words, stunning sound and now for "Instant Party."

The B-side status should not have been applied to "Instant Party," this is an A-side track in every meaning of the term, this has
completely silent run-in grooves which give a wonderfully clean and clear entrance to a really major Who recording.  This now
placed them on the very brink of psychedelia and as the original produced by Shel Talmy, you cannot find an earlier recording
to contain that.  Straight away the slower tempo becomes evident to the re-recorded "Circles, this has a dreamy feel and John
Entwistle's  French horn is totally different, so are Roger's incredible vocals.  In my enthusiasm to describe a loved Who track
I must not forget to say there was not the commonly found crackles and clicks as the track began.  On the contrary, the sound
is crystal clear and for all this colossal power, especially John's bass guitar,  even with my amp turned way up, there is not a
hint of distortion.  Roger's vocals are unreal because in 1965 nobody was singing like this, this is a bridging performance that
connected their 1965 debut album "My Generation," to the full on psychedelic music  heard on "A Quick One" & "Sell Out" LP's.
The Who create superb sounds propelled by Keith Moon's amazing drumming, Pete's guitar is now hinting at the sounds to come
on the named albums and singles.  The lyrics have several differences to the"Circles" version, if you listen after that awesome
instrumental section and digest how much longer it is, then when Roger sings the nextvverse, the lyrics are completely different
to the later recording.  The "round and around" repeated piece  is pure magic, the vocal harmonies on this track are among their
very finest, a truly amazing performance from the whole band, what a single!  A single featuring The Who firing on all cylinders,
a really fantastic record visually and to play, they don't come much better than this pair of tracks.

    R & M RECORDS.

My lifetime's love of music and records began at a very young age, the arrival of the Beatles and the 1960's decade
in general had a very profound effect. It was only natural to bring all my first hand experience of collecting vinyl
into becoming a professional record seller.  Nearly thirty years ago we entered into the wonderful atmosphere
of record fairs with the highest possible standards set. When the Internet became the world's new market place for
vinyl, in 2001 it was time to join ebay. Those standards were rigidly adhered to as they will always continue to be,
the basics of honesty and integrity were very much part of the era the music I love originated in, so here is our friendly
and very efficient service we are proud to provide;

We have kept all our charges at the same level for years now, but due to the Post Office's new price increases, regretfully we
will have to increase the cost of LP's, however, singles will remain unchanged.  Ebay were aware of that happening and have
increased their minimum postal cost for LP's to £7.00, that figure has been enforced by the UK Post Office and it will become
our UK First Class, Recorded Delivery cost for albums up to the value of £46.  A temporary reduction this week means we can
now post LP's for £5, but who knows how long before the Post Office return to £7?

For LP's valued above £46, the cost will be £9, we are unhappy about either increase but our high standard of packaging has meant
in 13 years of ebay trading, there has not been one record damaged, we are determined to maintain that in the present and future.

IN THE UK RECORDS UP TO THE VALUE OF £46 WILL BE SENT RECORDED DELIVERY, OVER £46 WILL BE
SENT SPECIAL DELIVERY.
