Imagine finding a whole stash of unreleased tracks featuring top jazz players like Joe Henderson, Freedie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Bennie Maupin, Paul Motian ... all led by an exciting and under-appreciated jazz pianist like Andrew Hill. That’s what must have happened to producers at Blue Note in the mid seventies, as all the tracks on this double LP from 1975 were recorded earlier, mostly in the sixties in a studio in New Jersey.
Most of the album - sides three and four - were recorded in 1965 by a quintet featuring the amazing front line of Joe Henderson on tenor sax and Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, backed by Richard Davis on bass and Joe Chambers on drums, all led by the adventurous Mr Hill on piano. All five tracks from that date show Hill’s talents both as a composer and as a leader, his challenging playing teasing great performances from all the players.
