Led Zeppelin : Physical Graffiti The original first pressing is a final upgrade archive copy and I have never heard better. This recently came from a small collection where the previous owner told me that he never played his records as he bought the cassette version and played that instead. I have played each side in its entirety and I have no reason to doubt him. The audio is immaculate throughout.
As per the first pressings it has the '484 Kings Road' address on the back cover, red lettering on the spine and no (W) Warner Bros logo on the labels. SSK 89400 // A1 / B5 / C1 / D1 The audio on S1 is Mint(-)
The audio on S2 is Mint(-)
The audio on S3 is Near Mint (Mint(-) for the vast majority)
The audio on S4 is Mint(-)
The cover is Ex
The labels are Mint
The outer sleeve is Ex+
The inner sleeves are Mint-
Visual grading
With no spindle wear you can see that the vinyls have never been played. They gleam 'as new' and have a stunning glossy sheen. S1 does have a small number of swish type markings but this was probably caused during manufacture and they certainly have no affect on the stunning quality of the audio. Each side has a very small number of mega faint hairlines only. This is not surprising as the previous owner did say he removed the records from the inner sleeves every now and then to look at them he just didn't play them!
Play grading
S1 begins with a stunning version of 'Custard Pie'. It plays with great power and the only 'background' are a couple of dust ticks on the fade out. If anything 'The Rover' is better! Again the power and depth of the track is sublime and the bass is so strong, absolutely superb! The very quiet intro on 'In My Time Of Dying' is fantastic! With only 2/3 mega light dust ticks the audio is Mint- without doubt and the quality does not decrease as the song progresses. This classic plays with such stunning precision and clarity and there is no distortion whatsoever. The standard is breathtaking and I do not think I've heard a 'cleaner' more impressive version than this. 100% awesome! Even the fade out has no 'background', audio does not get better than this! 'Houses Of The Holy' has minimal barely audible static on the intro and plays with superb audio once again. And for fear of repeating myself the fade out has no 'background' at all. 'Trampled Under Foot' plays to the same impeccable standard and the classic 'Kashmir' is quite simply Mint- from beginning to end. Amazing for such an early pressing. The depth and power here is astounding and it would be impossible to improve upon this 'high end' audio. And yes no interference on the long fade out!
'In The Light' has only the lightest of static, more like dust ticks, for the first few seconds and is the most impressive intro I have heard on this track in a long time. The remainder then displays audio of Mint- quality, although shock horror there are a small number of light dust ticks on the fade out! 'Bron-Yr-Aur' is Mint I am dispensing with minus for now! 'Down By The Seaside' and 'Ten Years Gone' play in sublime style also. Whilst the super quiet intro on the latter plays with incredible clarity I did hear one click which was a surprise I have to say! The rest of this classic plays with supreme audio although I would say there is a little distortion on the top end here and there.
I will not detail each track on S4 as needless to say every track plays to the same immaculate standard. Another example of the Mint clarity is on the 'Black Country Woman' spoken intro. It has no 'background' at all, as if it was pressed yesterday. 'Sick Again' ends this stunning album with perfect audio once more. No clicks, pops, crackle etc just pure audio pleasure!
In summary if ever there was a final upgrade archive copy of 'Physical Graffiti' then this is it! It is so rare to find an unplayed vinyl from the 70s let alone one that is so collectable. The clarity and power across both sides is the most impressive I have ever heard and it is just incredible to think it is 43 years old! With only one audible click this is audio at its very best and will grace any collection.
The Cover This cover has been very well preserved and has only minor shelf wear. All the windows are perfectly intact and top edges have hardly any handling wear at all. The thick spines are in excellent shape with only minor rubbing on the red letter spine and a little more on the bottom spine. The corners do have some rubbing but it is not excessive, the top two corners have a bit more wear. The front cover is very clean with no marking, just one faint scratch mark and a small number of faint creases around the edges. The back cover with the 'Swan Song' address is also in excellent shape with a few small creases around the edges again and a small amount of rubbing on the top edge.
Inner sleeves
The outer credits sleeve is in excellent condition with only a little rubbing along the top edges and a couple of faint creases. There is no foxing or marking anywhere.
Both inner sleeves are practically Mint and most would grade them as such. With no splits and no rubbing on the edges there are just a couple of tiny, barely visible corner rubs. Perhaps I'm being too strict! The labels
They are in perfect order with no marking or writing and no spindle wear as stated.
