ITEM DESCRIPTION:

This beautiful LP – amazingly, a still-sealed copy – features one of the more elusive titles in Columbia Masterworks "Modern American Music Series" (ML 4986, US pressing, label iteration unknown – presumably gray 6eye label, mono – no stereo edition exists), that devoted to the composers Carl Ruggles and Henry Cowell. All four works were warmly recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studio, New York, on the dates indicated below.

The exact contents are as follows:

Ruggles: Lilacs

> with Frederick Prausnitz conducting the Juilliard String Orchestra

(rec. 13 May 1954)

Ruggles: Portals

> with Frederick Prausnitz conducting the Juilliard String Orchestra

(rec. 13 May 1954)

Ruggles: Evocations

> with John Kirkpatrick, piano

(rec. 2 March 1955)

Cowell: Toccanta

> with Carleton Sprague Smith, flute / Helen Boatwright, soprano / Aldo Parisot, cello / John Kirkpatrick, piano

(rec. 12 August 1954)

The remarkable cover art reproduces a detail from a painting by Gabor Peterdi, held at the MOMA in New York. There are insightful liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, provided in English only.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is minor bumping at corners, but that is all – otherwise, the album appears as new – overall, a truly excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the LP is MINT. This is a still-sealed, unplayed copy – the ideal collector's copy.

USA Buyers: shipping delays from Spain (where I am) to the USA are extreme due to the current situation.
I apologize for the inconvenience, but I am advising USA buyers not to purchase from me at this time. Commercial shipping (e.g., UPS, DHL) is a possibility, but these are quite expensive and any such costs must be borne entirely by the buyer.
Please write with any questions, I will be happy to help.  - Posted 19 May 2020
