ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful and quite rare LP – the vinyl itself is unplayed (see the photo) – from Deutsche Grammophon (419 241-1, German pressing, DDD stereo) features Anne-Sophie Mutter and Herbert von Karajan's remarkable 'live' performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 35, recorded in concert at the Grosses Festspielhaus, Salzburg on 15 August 1988 with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on resplendent form.
This was one of those very special occasions when soloist, conductor, orchestra, audience, and sound engineering all came together to produce a truly memorable recording – one imbued with a tremendous sense of occasion and brought off with a frisson and beauty that is quite breathtaking – indeed, for this listener, Mutter, von Karajan, and the VPO's rapt performance of the 2nd Movement Canzonetta is simply unsurpassed on record. There may be very slight blemishes elsewhere, owing to the pitfalls of live performance, but they are just so many spots on the sun – superb!
The memorable cover photo was taken by Siegfried Lauterwasser. There are insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Hartmut Lück (in German), James A. Hepokoski (in English), André Lischke (in French) and Giordano Montecchi (in Italian).
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the album appears virtually as new. There are no splits, creases, bumps, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, and glossy – overall, a superb collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is MINT. This is a pristine, unplayed copy – the ideal collector's copy.
