The Who : Tommy A1 / A1 / B1 / B1 1st Press Limited Edition No 69902 Laminated Cover 1969
This first press plays with stunning quality with only very minimal intrusion. Rather than state it here please read my full audio grading as below to get a full appreciation of the audio, as you will see the vast majority plays with a clarity, depth and power you rarely find on these first pressings.
The tri-fold cover is in excellent shape with not too much shelf wear and is laminated on three sides. Discogs does say that the A1/A1/B1/B1 first press was issued with the one side laminated cover but as the second limited edition pressing was produced soon after it would not surprise me if some of the first pressings were housed in the three sided laminate one. I very doubt this is a mix and match, I mean why?! I have read that many anomalies occurred in these packing 'factories' - I don't think quality control was much of a 'thing' back then!
The limited edition lyric booklet is in great condition with hardly any wear and the poly-lined inner sleeves are also in excellent shape.

Visual description
The vinyls are in excellent condition and still have a strong glossy sheen with no scratches on the playing surface. S3 does have a tiny scratch on the lead in grooves which means you have to set the needle down just beyond in order to play the first track. Under a bright light there are some faint hairlines but they are superficial as they have no affect on the superb audio. The Track Record labels are very clean with only some spindle wear.
Play grading
The run in on S1 has no background and then the instrumental 'Overture' plays with STUNNING quality, I cannot emphasise enough how strong and clear the audio is. There is no background and the clarity and depth on offer here is just sensational. It is Mint and just could not play any better.
The segue into 'It's A Boy' is flawless and I'm going to say the opening Captain Walker vocal is the first vocal despite what it says on the lyric booklet. The timings certainly suggest it is. With only a handful of barely audible statics on the intro it plays with sublime clarity and depth with no sign of any intrusion and again Mint is deserved.
'1921' is of the same high end standard with no zero interference. So far I cannot believe how well this first press is playing! The instrumental sections are immaculate and Townshend's vocals are so clear. Mint
The intro on 'Amazing Journey' has a couple of very light ticks and then Daltrey's opening vocal plays to perfection. It continues in the same way with nothing to detract from the audio. Incredible sonic quality all the way through. I will grade the intro as Near Mint- but the rest is Mint no doubt about that.
'Sparks' again plays with phenomenal clarity and the depth on the audio I just can't put it into words! It basically plays like it would have done when first placed on a turntable back in '69! I don't want to overdo it but the sonic quality is out of this world! Mint all the way.
'The Hawker' has one light tick literally on the first note and it then plays with superb audio from that point on. Perhaps just a hint of inner groove distortion on Daltrey's vocal but it's so so minor and totally non-intrusive, hardly worth a mention really. A Near Mint version I will say.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The classic 'Christmas' more than keeps up the standard and plays with impeccable quality throughout. The quieter See me, feel me section has a superb clarity of sound with only a couple of minor statics. Mint-
'Cousin Kevin' is stunning! Entwistle never wrote average tracks that's for sure. With only one mega light tick at the beginning the playback is as close to perfect as could be. Mint-
I'm also going to grade 'The Acid Queen' as Mint- because it has one light static sound on the final note! On the fade out really, a bit harsh I know!
'Underture' plays with phenomenal audio with essentially no interference. Once again the definition and depth of the audio is so impressive and I only noticed one minor tick in the middle section, it is very quiet. I cannot stress enough just how clean the audio is, the clarity really is on another level. This has to be Mint- at the very least.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As stated you have to set the needle down at the start of S3 because of that tiny scratch on the lead in grooves. 'Do You Think It's Alright?' has a clicky sound on the first note but the music is loud so not that intrusive. A couple of minor ticks just after and it then plays perfectly. Let's say Ex
'Fiddle About' with it's 'interesting' lyrics has no intrusion at all and grades as Mint
The acoustic intro on the all time classic 'Pinball Wizard' plays with incredible clarity and as the volume increases there is no let up in quality. Daltrey's opening vocal is just as strong as is the first chorus. It continues to play with superb power and depth and has only a minimal amount of static on the fade out. Mint-
The brief 'There's A Doctor' has only 2/3 minor statics at the beginning and no other background. Near Mint
A stunning version of 'Go To The Mirror!' follows with STUNNING clarity and power throughout. A classic that could not play with any greater precision. Mint
'Tommy Can You Hear Me?' and 'Smash The Mirror' play to the same standard with no interference. The sonic quality is superb and they both grade as Mint
'Sensation' ends S3 with imperious quality i.e. no intrusion not even a dust tick. Mint
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
'Miracle Cure' plays with perfect clarity and then 'Sally Simpson' is 'as new' with no background at all. No exaggeration the clarity is STUNNING and is a superb listen from start to finish. Mint
'I'm Free' does not disappoint either and plays with real quality and... no interference. Another Mint track.
The gentle intro on 'Welcome' is faultless and Daltrey's first vocal is just as strong. There are a couple of very quiet statics at the start of the instrumental section and also a couple of more obvious ticks / light clicks just prior to the final vocal. Not loud though and the vast majority of this number does play with genuine quality. Ex+ overall.
'Tommy's Holiday Camp' plays with great clarity, a couple of barely audible statics that is all. A quirky little number from Mr. Moon and Mint- is deserved.
'We're Not Gonna Take It' once again demonstrates just how well this LP has been looked after and plays with superb sonic quality through every section. I heard only a couple of light statics at the start of the See me, feel me section and then the remainder plays with such quality. No inner groove distortion and the classic end section is just stunning. The long fade out plays perfectly and this is easily a Mint- conclusion to this classic album.
The Gatefold, Lyric Booklet & Inner Sleeves
The cover is in excellent condition with only light shelf wear. The edges have only a little rubbing and the wide spine remains strong with just a little wear on the top corner. The other corners are in pretty good shape with only minimal wear. The front cover is unmarked but does have some laminate creasing / 'wear' in the bottom left corner, nothing much though. The back cover is in great condition with just one tiny 'nick' on the left edge and two small laminate creases. The inside of the gatefold is in fantastic order with just one very small indent at the foot of the middle panel and minor creasing at the bottom of the inner spine. As stated this is laminated on three sides and is a fine example overall.
The lyric booklet has been very well cared for and has only a small number of faint spots on the front and back page. It has barely any creasing. The two poly-lined inner sleeves have no side splits or tears and very little creasing. They just have some marking here and there caused by the glue that holds the poly-lining and the paper together, a very common feature.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping. This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage. The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered. Any over-payment will always be refunded.
The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD). An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known. All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection. They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection. I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.
The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each. There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up! Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
