An original STEREO 3rd press of PPM on the UK Parlophone label. Matrix 1/1. Stampers 1P/1G [crazy early]. Please note SOME 3rd pressings come with a duplicate 33speed by the matrix number. This is, in effect, a print error. Some 1P/1G's have the error and others use the corrected labels [as we have here]. So, the correction occurred during the period where the 1P/1G stamper was in use [i.e. very early on]. Please note these 3rd pressings DO NOT mention 'Sold In The UK' or 'Recording 1st Pub'. They are, in effect, the very next copies to come after those super sought after 'Black & Gold' copies. And in STEREO...would have been only pressed in very small numbers - hence the ridiculous low stamper numbers. Remember, that PPM was released in STEREO one month after the initial Mono release. So, I would imagine ALL Black & Gold stereo copies and the first few 3rd Y&B's [including this copy] were all pressed in APRIL 1963 and were on the record store shelves in that final week of APRIL 1963. What is also quite notable, here, is that the LP comes in an original STEREO 'Gold Cover' with Angus Bean credit starting after the final "S" of .."Songs" [printed by Ernest J Day]. This is the very 1st and TRUE STEREO version of the cover. By that I mean all the 'Black & Gold' copies would have been housed in this cover - in this exact same designed cover. We also have the original Emitex inner sleeve too. So, we're 100% genuine and 100% complete.
Vinyl (Ex) In remarkable condition and has only seen light relatively careful use. Under close inspection there are a couple of light marks per side, and one semi-feelable mark which runs perpendicular across the 1st three tacks on side 1. I've obviously paid this mark a lot of attention to find out what the ramifications are... And I am pleased to report that this super heavy pressing takes it completely in its stride. I'm struggling to hear anything at all in the audio resulting from this mark. Thankfully, it is at right angles and the pressing weight manages to protect the audio. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals an EXCELLENT level of playback. If you asked me what level of playback would you really want to aim for? I would answer "precisely like this copy manages". It has obviously seen some light careful use - but there's no sign of said use in the audio spectrum. What I'm getting is... that clear, bold, mono, rich sound which the early copies are famed for. THIS is precisely the sort of rendition a collector should be looking to track down. Look after it and it will produce a fantastic rendition every time you play it. And it plays clean all the way through. Be it the quiet acoustic quiet numbers or the up-tempo energetic moments. It's just a solid clean performer from start to finish. You might detect a couple of minor crackles in a couple of isolated spots per side, and at worst one minor tick in 'Secret'. But you can rest assured that this copy will get you precisely to where you need to get to to fully appreciate this early Beatles masterpiece.
Cover (Vg) Remember, we are ACTUALLY dealing with something which can claim to be "rare". Most Beatles Lps never get anywhere close to being 'rare', but once in a blue-moon..a true rarity appears. Remember too..this cover is actually precisely the same version as you will find housing a true original Black & Gold stereo copy. So, with all that in mind..this copy is still in very respectable condition. The front cover image is really well preserved. No signs of ageing and just a couple of lightest creases in the bottom left corner - it lies totally flat. The rear, which will always reveals a few issues, has avoided most of the usual obvious ageing that often exhibits. There's a bit of low-level foxing in places and a couple of grubby patches. The only vague issue on the back is that the flipbacks are a wee bit damaged in places [see bottom right and top right particularly]. They are all secure, but there is certainly a cosmetic impact there. At the bottom of the opening edge the bottom edge has split for about one inch. There' a bit of edge wear in places - but it is pretty minor really considering the vintage and title. The spine is in really nice order with all text fully legible. Just a bit of wear noticeable at the top and bottom. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity thanks to the heavy-card employed in manufacture. Overall a very solid and respectable example.
Inner (Vg+) Minor ageing. Only one 1 inch side split.
